Which platforms matter for car and van hire
Most hire bookings start with a search: "van hire near me", "car hire at the airport", "7 seater hire this weekend". Your Google Business Profile is often the first thing people see, with your opening hours, reviews and photos of the fleet. Keep it accurate and post to it every week. Google Business Profile posts can be updates, offers or events, can include photos or video and an action button, and posts older than six months are archived unless you set a date range.
If you run a desk at an airport, read Google's guidelines on co-located businesses. They list a car rental at an airport as a business that should have its own profile only if pick-up and drop-off happen at separate locations. Getting the profile set up correctly avoids suspensions and duplicate listings.
Instagram is where people judge the cars and vans themselves: clean photos, short walkaround videos and Stories showing what is available this week. Facebook reaches local people moving house or planning a family trip. LinkedIn matters if you want business accounts, such as contract hire for trades or replacement vehicles for local firms.
| Platform | What it does for car and van hire | Start here if |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Urgent local searches, reviews, offers and opening hours | Always. Check it weekly. |
| Fleet photos, walkarounds and Stories of what is free this week | You can photograph vehicles well | |
| Local movers, families and community groups | Most of your hires are private customers | |
| Business accounts, trades and contract hire | You want regular corporate or trade work | |
| TikTok | Short "how big is a Luton van really?" style clips | Someone on the team enjoys filming |
| YouTube | Longer how-to videos on loading, towing and controls | You get the same questions at every handover |

A weekly rhythm built from the forecourt
Your best content is already on site: vehicles being cleaned, checked and handed over. A phone and five minutes a day is enough.
- Monday: a vehicle spotlight with the dimensions or seats people actually ask about.
- Tuesday: an explainer, such as how the deposit works or what "full to full" means.
- Wednesday: a short handover tip, such as how to check tyres and lights before you set off.
- Thursday: a local trip or moving-day idea, with the right vehicle for it.
- Friday: weekend availability, posted as a Story and a Google Business Profile update.
- Monthly: a team post, a new vehicle arriving or a business customer story with permission.
Prices, deposits and extras: say it all up front
Hire pricing confuses people, and confusion turns into bad reviews. In the UK, the CMA says the total price must be given in any invitation to purchase, including a social media post, and that mandatory charges such as fees and taxes should normally be in that total. Hiding charges until later is drip pricing, which the CMA says is illegal. A "from" price is allowed if it includes all applicable mandatory charges. Optional extras can be shown separately.
Car rental has been a focus for consumer regulators before. The European Commission reports that in 2017 five major car rental companies made commitments to the EU's consumer protection network covering pricing transparency, clarity on insurance and waiver policies and refuelling options, and fairer handling of alleged damage. Those are good topics for your own posts: explain them before the customer has to ask.
- Show the total price, including any mandatory fees, whenever a post names a price.
- Explain the deposit: how much, how it is taken and when it is released.
- Explain the excess and what each insurance or waiver option covers, in plain words.
- Say which fuel policy you use and what happens if the car comes back with less.
- Say who pays for what if the vehicle comes back damaged, and how you check it together.

Damage photos, handovers and customer privacy
A short video of a proper handover, walking round the car and photographing every panel with the customer, does two jobs. It shows people you are fair, and it teaches them to do the same check at your counter.
Be careful with real customers. Number plates, faces, home addresses on a moving-day post and booking screens can all identify someone. Use a demo vehicle and a member of staff for handover videos. If you want to share a customer's photo from a trip, ask first and keep the plate covered.
- Film handover how-tos with staff and a vehicle that is not on hire.
- Never post booking screens, driving licences or damage claims about a named customer.
- Blur or crop number plates on any vehicle out on hire.
- Ask before sharing a customer's trip photo, and credit them only if they agree.
- Never film or post from a phone while driving a hire vehicle.

Reviews and complaints
Hire reviews are often about the deposit, the queue or a damage charge. Reply to every review calmly, without repeating booking details, and take disputes to email or phone.
Do not offer a discount for a review. Google's policy bans incentives for reviews and selectively asking only happy customers. In the US, the FTC's rule on fake reviews, announced in August 2024, bans buying fake reviews and offering rewards for reviews with a particular sentiment. In the UK, the CMA's guidance on consumer reviews names fake reviews and reviews that hide an incentive as banned practices. Ask every customer the same way at return.

A simple monthly plan
Hire demand follows school holidays, bank holidays and moving season where you are. Check last year's bookings and plan posts a few weeks before each peak.
Disclosure: this guide is published by Zolyp, an AI social media manager. Zolyp plans a calendar around your content pillars, writes and designs each post, and schedules it to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads. You start in review-everything mode, so nothing goes live without your approval. Brand Brain can hold your fixed wording for deposits and fuel policy, so every post explains them the same way. Zolyp does not check prices against CMA or FTC rules, so check every price before you approve a post. Everything in this guide works just as well done by hand.
- Week 1: check bookings for the coming peaks and pick the vehicles to feature.
- Week 2: photograph and film the fleet, clean and in good light.
- Week 3: post one explainer on deposits, fuel or insurance and one LinkedIn post for business customers.
- Week 4: read every review, update your Google Business Profile and plan next month.

Common questions
Which social media platform is best for car and van hire?
Google Business Profile, because most hires start with a local search. Keep it accurate and post weekly. Instagram is next, for fleet photos and walkarounds, with Facebook for local customers and LinkedIn for business accounts.
Can I post a "from" price for car hire?
Yes, in the UK, as long as it includes all applicable mandatory charges. The CMA says the total price must be given in an invitation to purchase, including a social media post, and that hiding mandatory fees until later is drip pricing.
What should a hire company post about?
The vehicles, the questions people ask at the counter (deposit, fuel, excess, insurance), trip and moving-day ideas, and your team. Explaining the awkward topics before booking prevents most complaints.
Can I post photos of customers with their hire car?
Only with permission, and with the number plate covered. Never post booking screens, licences or details of a damage dispute.
Can I offer a discount for a good review?
No. Google bans incentives for reviews and selectively asking happy customers, the FTC bans rewards for reviews with a particular sentiment, and the CMA lists reviews that hide an incentive as a banned practice.
