Which platforms matter for hostels and campsites
Guests choose a hostel or campsite from photos, reviews and price. They find you on maps, booking sites and social media, then check your own accounts to see whether the place is as good as it looks.
Instagram is the main platform for most: pitches at sunset, dorm rooms, the shared kitchen, the walk to the beach. Reels and Stories show what is happening this week. Google Business Profile matters for travellers searching on the move, and posts there can be updates, offers or events with photos, video and an action button. Posts older than six months are archived unless you set a date range.
Facebook reaches families, caravan and camping groups and returning guests. TikTok suits short, honest "what you get for the price" tours. YouTube suits longer site tours that families and groups watch before booking.
| Platform | What it does for a hostel or campsite | Start here if |
|---|---|---|
| Shows the place, the people and the area | Always. It is your shop window. | |
| Google Business Profile | Travellers searching nearby, reviews and directions | Always. Check it monthly. |
| Families, camping groups and returning guests | You host families, tourers or groups | |
| TikTok | Honest room and pitch tours for younger travellers | Your guests are mostly under 30 |
| YouTube | Full site tours and how-to-get-here videos | Guests ask the same questions before booking |

A weekly rhythm built around the stay
The best posts answer "what is it actually like?" Film the place at its best, but never make it look bigger, quieter or newer than it is.
- Monday: a room, dorm or pitch spotlight, with what is included.
- Tuesday: a local trip idea: a walk, a beach, a café, a bus route.
- Wednesday: a practical post: check-in, kitchen rules, what to pack.
- Thursday: a team or volunteer post, with their consent.
- Friday: weekend weather, events and any spaces left.
- Monthly: a guest story or photo, reposted with permission.
Prices and fees: show the total
Hidden fees cause more bad reviews than small rooms. In the UK, the CMA says the total price must be given in any invitation to purchase, including a social media post, with mandatory charges such as fees and taxes normally included. It says hiding charges until later is drip pricing and is illegal. A "from" price is allowed if it includes all applicable mandatory charges. Optional extras, such as an electric hook-up you can choose, can be listed separately.
In the US, the FTC's Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees has applied to short-term lodging since 12 May 2025. The FTC names hotels, motels, inns, short-term and vacation rentals among the businesses covered, and says the rule applies whenever a business offers, displays or advertises a price. Mandatory fees, such as resort or cleaning fees, must be in the total price shown. Government charges can be left out of that total but must be disclosed before payment. The FAQ does not name hostels or campsites, so if you are in the US, treat your advertised prices as if the rule applies.
- Show the total nightly price including any mandatory booking, cleaning or linen fee.
- List optional extras separately: hook-up, towels, breakfast, parking.
- Say clearly what is per person, per pitch or per night.
- Say if a price applies only to certain dates or minimum stays.

Guest photos, privacy and drones
Guests in a dorm or around a campfire are on holiday, not in your advert. Ask before you photograph anyone, and ask again before reposting a guest's photo. Never show room numbers, door codes, guest names or a guest's tent and car in a way that shows they are away.
Drone footage sells campsites well, but in the UK you need to register first. The CAA says a drone weighing 100g to under 250g with a camera needs a Flyer ID and an Operator ID, and one weighing 250g to under 25kg needs both.
- Ask before photographing guests, and never photograph children without their parent's consent.
- Ask before reposting a guest's post, and credit them.
- Never show door codes, room numbers or guest names.
- Register with the CAA before flying a drone with a camera, and keep away from guests.

Reviews and a simple monthly plan
Reply to every review, thank people by first name only, and take complaints to a private message. Do not offer a discount or a free night for a review. Google's policy bans incentives for reviews and selectively asking only happy customers. In the UK, the CMA's guidance on consumer reviews names fake reviews and reviews that hide an incentive as banned practices, and the FTC's fake reviews rule bans rewards for reviews with a particular sentiment.
Disclosure: this guide is published by Zolyp, an AI social media manager. Zolyp plans a calendar around your content pillars, writes and designs each post, and schedules it to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads. You start in review-everything mode, so nothing goes live without your approval. You can add your own photos or pull from your brand gallery, and Google Business is one of the platforms Zolyp publishes to. Zolyp does not check prices or fees, so check every price before you approve a post. Everything in this guide works just as well done by hand.
- Week 1: check availability and plan posts for the quiet dates first.
- Week 2: photograph rooms, pitches and the area in good light, with guests' permission.
- Week 3: post one local guide and one practical how-to.
- Week 4: reply to reviews, update your Google Business Profile and plan next month.

Common questions
Which social media platform is best for a campsite or hostel?
Instagram, because guests choose from photos and short videos. Keep Google Business Profile accurate and active too, for travellers searching nearby.
Do I have to include fees in prices on social media?
In the UK, yes: the CMA says the total price, including mandatory charges, must be in an invitation to purchase, including a social post. In the US, the FTC's fees rule requires the total price for short-term lodging such as hotels and vacation rentals.
Can I repost guests' photos?
Yes, with their permission and a credit. Never show door codes, room numbers or guest names, and get a parent's consent before showing children.
Do I need permission to fly a drone over my campsite?
In the UK you need to register with the CAA first. A drone of 100g to under 250g with a camera needs a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and one of 250g to under 25kg needs both.
Can I offer a free night for a good review?
No. Google bans incentives for reviews, the CMA lists reviews that hide an incentive as a banned practice, and the FTC bans rewards for reviews with a particular sentiment.
