What is youTube Studio?
Also called YT Studio, YouTube Creator Studio, studio.youtube.com.
YouTube Studio is YouTube's free control panel for channel owners, at studio.youtube.com and in the YouTube Studio app, where you upload and edit videos, read analytics, reply to comments and manage your channel's settings and branding.
Why it matters
Everything behind your channel happens in Studio: uploading, scheduling, titles and thumbnails, captions, and seeing which videos bring viewers and subscribers. A small business doesn't need every feature, but knowing where the main ones are makes a YouTube channel far easier to run.
Example
A driving school uploads a lesson video in Studio on Sunday, sets it to go public on Tuesday at 6 p.m., adds a custom thumbnail and subtitles, then checks Analytics the next week to see where viewers stopped watching.
What's in the YouTube Studio menu
Sign in at studio.youtube.com on a computer. The left menu includes:
- Dashboard: an overview of recent activity on your channel and news from YouTube
- Content: your videos, Shorts, live streams, posts and playlists
- Analytics: performance of your channel and videos
- Community: view and reply to comments
- Subtitles: add subtitles and captions
- Content detection: copyright tools, including takedown requests
- Earn: monetisation settings, if you're in the YouTube Partner Program
- Customisation: your channel's layout, branding and basic info
- Audio Library: music and sound effects you can use in videos
How to upload and schedule a video
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Click Create in the top right, then Upload videos, and choose your file.
- Add a title (up to 100 characters), a description and a thumbnail, and say whether the video is made for kids.
- Add subtitles, cards or an end screen if you want them. End screens need a video of 25 seconds or longer.
- Under Visibility, choose Schedule and pick a date, or choose Private, Unlisted or Public to publish now. Then click Save.
The YouTube Studio app
The Studio app for phones covers the essentials: a dashboard, your content, analytics, comments and, if you're eligible, earnings. It is handy for checking how a new video is doing and replying to comments on the go. Detailed editing and settings are easier on a computer.
Many owners use both: a computer for uploading, editing details and reading reports properly, and the app for a quick look at new comments and how the latest video is doing during the week. Anything you change in one shows up in the other, because both work on the same channel.
A simple weekly routine
You don't need to live in Studio. Fifteen minutes a week is enough for most small businesses.
Check the Dashboard for anything new, reply to comments in Community, and open Analytics to see which videos brought views and subscribers. Look at where viewers stopped watching in your latest video and note what to change next time. Then check that next week's video is uploaded and scheduled, with its title, description and thumbnail done.
- Content: keep titles and descriptions clear and searchable
- Analytics: watch time, average view duration and traffic sources show what is working
- Community: reply to questions in comments, as they are often potential customers
- Customisation: add your logo, banner, links and a channel description
