What is an instagram collab post?
Also called Instagram Collabs, collaborative post, co-authored post, Instagram collab.
An Instagram collab post is a feed post or reel co-authored by more than one account. Once an invited collaborator accepts, the post shows on both profiles, lists both accounts as authors and is shared with both sets of followers.
Why it matters
A collab puts your post in front of another account's audience without paying for ads, and the likes and comments are combined in one place rather than split across two copies. For small businesses it is a natural fit for joint events, partner products, local creators and suppliers.
Example
A coffee roaster and the café that serves its beans post one reel together about a new seasonal blend. It appears on both profiles, both sets of followers see it, and the comments from both audiences are on the same post.
How to make a collab post
You invite collaborators while creating the post, before you share it. These are the steps in the Instagram app on a phone.
- Create your post or reel as usual and go to the final screen where you write the caption.
- Tap Tag people.
- Tap Invite collaborator and search for the account.
- Select the account, then tap Done.
- Share the post. The invited account gets a request in its messages and must accept it before its name is added.
Rules worth knowing
You can add up to 5 collaborators to a post. Public accounts can invite public or private accounts; private accounts can invite people who follow them.
The original creator owns the post. Only they can delete it, and if they do, it disappears from every collaborator's profile too. If the original creator makes their account private, only their followers can see the post. Collaborators can remove themselves at any time, and you can't add collaborators to stories.
Collab vs tag vs mention
A tag or mention points to an account, but the post is not shared with that account's followers and it isn't listed as an author. A collab is shared with the collaborator's followers and names them as an author, but only after they accept.
If you have a paid relationship with the other account, Instagram's branded content rules still apply: use the paid partnership label as well.
Use a tag when you want to credit someone, such as the photographer or a product you used. Use a collab when the post genuinely belongs to both of you and you want both audiences to see it.
Collab ideas and tips
The best collabs feel natural to both audiences. A few that work for local and small businesses:
- A café and a bakery announcing a pastry they now stock together
- A venue and a band or speaker promoting an event
- A shop and a local maker introducing a new product
- Two neighbouring businesses running a joint giveaway
- A customer or creator sharing their experience, with their permission
- A supplier showing how their product is used in your work
- Pick partners whose followers would genuinely care about your product.
- Agree who posts, the caption and the timing before you start.
- Make the content useful to both audiences, not an advert for one side.
- Reply to comments from both audiences, from both accounts.
