What is a facebook group?

Also called Facebook groups for business, FB group, Facebook community group.

A Facebook group is a community space on Facebook where members post, comment and talk with each other about a shared interest. Groups can be public or private, and private groups can be visible in search or hidden.

Why it matters

A Page talks to customers; a group lets customers talk to each other. For a small business that builds loyalty, surfaces real questions and feedback, and keeps your most engaged customers close. Groups suit businesses with a natural community: classes, clubs, hobbies, local neighbourhoods and product owners.

Example

A yoga studio runs a private group for members where it posts the weekly timetable, members share progress and ask questions, and teachers answer. Members who join a class through the group often bring a friend next time.

How to create a Facebook group

These are the steps on a computer.

  1. From your Feed, click Groups in the left menu. If you can't see it, click See more.
  2. Click Create new group.
  3. Enter your group name.
  4. Choose the privacy option. If you choose private, also choose whether the group is visible or hidden.
  5. Invite people to your group.
  6. Click Create.

Public vs private groups

In a public group, anyone on or off Facebook can see what's posted and who the members are, and anyone can find the group. In a private group, only members can see posts and the member list. A private group can be visible, so people can find it and ask to join, or hidden, so only members and invited people can find it.

Choose carefully at the start. Facebook's help centre says a public group can be changed to private only if it is less than 30 days old or has fewer than 10,000 members.

For most business groups, private and visible is a sensible default: people can find the group and ask to join, but posts stay among members, which makes them more comfortable sharing questions and photos.

Running a group for your business

  • Write a clear description and a few short rules, and pin them.
  • Ask joining questions to keep out spam and learn who your members are.
  • Post something that invites replies, such as a weekly question or a share-your-results thread.
  • Keep promotion light: members joined for the community, not adverts.
  • Add trusted members or staff as moderators as the group grows.
  • Avoid treating the group as a second Page that only posts offers.
  • Don't leave spam or arguments unanswered for days.
  • Decide who will run the group each week before you start it.

Weekly post ideas for a business group

A group stays alive when members have a reason to post, not just to read. A simple weekly rhythm helps:

  • Monday: a question of the week related to your field
  • Wednesday: a tip, a short video or a behind-the-scenes photo
  • Friday: a thread where members share their own results or photos
  • Monthly: a members-only early look at news or a small offer
  • Any time: welcome posts that tag new members so they feel noticed

Common questions

Should my business have a Facebook Page or a group?

Most businesses need a Page first, because it's the public home for your business. Add a group if you have a community that wants to talk to each other.

Can I change my group from public to private later?

Only if it is less than 30 days old or has fewer than 10,000 members, according to Facebook's help centre.

Who can see posts in a private Facebook group?

Only current members can see what's shared and who the members are.
