What is a meta business portfolio?

Also called Meta Business Manager, Facebook Business Manager, business portfolio, Business Manager.

A Meta business portfolio is the container that holds a business's Facebook Pages, Instagram accounts, ad accounts and other Meta assets, along with the people and partners who can access them. Many guides still call it Business Manager.

Why it matters

A portfolio puts your business, not one person's Facebook account, in charge of your Page, Instagram and ads. That matters when staff leave, when you hire an agency, or if someone's personal account is locked. You also need one to use Meta Business Suite.

Example

A dental clinic creates a business portfolio, adds its Facebook Page, Instagram account and ad account, gives the receptionist access to post content only, and gives its marketing agency partner access to the ad account, without sharing anyone's password.

What a business portfolio holds

According to Meta's Business Help Centre, a portfolio can bring together Facebook Pages, Instagram accounts, Threads accounts, ad accounts, catalogues, apps, datasets and Meta Pixels. Each asset can belong to only one business portfolio.

It also manages people. Each person gets only the access they need, and partners such as agencies can be given full or partial access to specific assets.

How to create a business portfolio

These are the steps on a computer.

  1. Go to business.facebook.com and log in with your Facebook profile or managed Meta account.
  2. Click the dropdown menu below Home in the top left.
  3. Click Create a business portfolio.
  4. Enter a name that matches your business's public name, without special characters.
  5. If you're using a Facebook profile, enter your name and business email.
  6. Click Create. Then confirm your business email address from the email Meta sends.

After you create it

You get full control of the portfolio. Add your Page, Instagram account and ad account, then invite people and assign them to the assets they work on. You can personally create up to 2 business portfolios, and there's no limit on how many you can belong to.

Some advertising and developer features need business verification, which is a separate check of your business details. Verification of the business is not the same as a verified badge.

Common problems and good habits

Many small businesses only discover their set-up is fragile when something goes wrong. Typical problems are a Page created years ago by a former employee or freelancer who still holds the only admin access, an ad account tied to one person's card and profile, or two portfolios created by mistake that each hold some of the assets.

Fix these while things are working. Make sure the business owns its portfolio, that at least two trusted people have full control, and that every Page, Instagram account and ad account sits in the right portfolio. If an asset is owned by someone else, ask them to transfer it or share it with your portfolio.

  • Have at least two people with full control, so you are never locked out.
  • Give staff the lowest access they need, and remove it when they leave.
  • Add agencies as partners rather than as individual people.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication for everyone with access.

Common questions

Is a business portfolio the same as Business Manager?

It is the same role. Meta's help centre now uses the name business portfolio, but many people and older guides still say Business Manager.

Do I need a business portfolio for a small business?

If you use Meta Business Suite, yes, because Business Suite needs one. It is also the safest way to share access with staff or an agency.

How many business portfolios can I create?

You can personally create up to 2, according to Meta's Business Help Centre.
