What is a tikTok Duet?

Also called Duet, duet on TikTok, TikTok duets.

A TikTok Duet is a video posted side by side with another creator's TikTok video, in a split screen where both play at the same time, so you can react to, add to or perform along with the original.

Why it matters

Duets let you join conversations already happening on TikTok, which can put your video in front of people interested in the original. For a business they are a simple way to react to customer videos, demonstrate a product next to a question, or answer a trend without making a whole video from scratch.

Example

A paint shop duets a customer's video asking "What colour should I paint this hallway?" and, on its side of the screen, holds up three colour cards and explains which would make the space feel bigger.

How to Duet a video on TikTok

These are the steps in the TikTok app.

  1. Tap the Share button on the side of the video you want to Duet.
  2. Tap Duet at the bottom. You may need to swipe to find it.
  3. Add effects or filters, or use other camera tools.
  4. Tap the record button to start and stop recording, then tap the tick to continue.
  5. Add text, stickers, a voice effect or other edits.
  6. Tap Next to add a description, hashtags and other details, or tap Your Story to post it as a story.
  7. Tap Post, or save it to Drafts.

Who can Duet your videos

You must have a public account to let others Duet your videos. In your privacy settings you can allow Everyone, or only Friends (followers you follow back), and you can turn Duet off for individual posts. Not every video has Duet turned on.

A Duet appears only on the profile of the person who made it; your original stays on yours. The Duet maker's privacy settings decide who can see and interact with the Duet, and you can remove Duets made with your posts.

Duet vs Stitch

A Duet plays the whole original next to your video at the same time. A Stitch uses a short clip of the original first, then cuts to your video. Duets suit reactions and side-by-side comparisons; Stitches suit answering a question or adding a follow-up.

Both formats send viewers back to the original creator, which is part of why they spread. That also means the tone of your response is visible to the original creator's audience, so keep it friendly and useful even when you disagree.

Duet ideas, and what to avoid

  • React to customers' videos of your product, with thanks or a tip
  • Show your version of a popular how-to
  • Answer a question someone asked on video
  • Compare before and after side by side
  • Avoid silent reactions that add nothing to the original.
  • Avoid duetting content to make fun of its creator.
  • Stay close to your business's topic so your account stays clear.

Common questions

Why can't I Duet a video?

Can I stop people from duetting my videos?

Yes. You can limit Duets to friends in your privacy settings or turn them off for individual posts.
