What is an explore page?
Also called Instagram Explore, Explore tab, Instagram explore page.
The Explore page is Instagram's grid of recommended photos and reels from accounts you don't follow, chosen for each person based on their interests and the posts they've interacted with before.
Why it matters
Explore is one of the main places Instagram shows your posts to people who don't follow you yet. You can't apply to be featured; posts reach Explore when Instagram predicts people with similar interests will like, save or share them. Understanding how it chooses posts helps you make content that has a chance of being recommended.
Example
Someone who often saves recipe reels opens Explore and sees a local deli's reel about making focaccia, even though they have never heard of the deli. They watch it, visit the profile and follow.
How Instagram picks posts for Explore
Instagram explains that Explore is made up of recommendations it finds for you, which is different from Feed and Stories, where most of what you see comes from accounts you follow.
To choose and order posts, it looks at signals such as:
The order matters too. Once Instagram has gathered posts you might like, it ranks them by how interested it predicts you'll be in each one, much as it ranks Feed and Stories.
- Your activity: posts you've liked, saved, shared or commented on, and how you've used Explore before
- Information about the post: how popular it is and how quickly people are engaging with it
- Information about the account that posted: how often people have interacted with it in recent weeks
What keeps posts out of Explore
Instagram has Recommendation Guidelines on top of its Community Standards. Posts that go against them can still appear to your followers but are not recommended in places like Explore and Reels. An account that repeatedly breaks the rules can lose eligibility for recommendations for a while.
Account Status in your settings shows whether your account can currently be recommended. If it says it can't, that explains a sudden drop in reach from non-followers.
How to improve your chances
- Post original photos and reels, not reposts of other people's content.
- Aim for saves and shares: useful tips, checklists and before-and-after posts get both.
- Stay on a clear topic so Instagram learns who is interested in your posts.
- Use a few relevant hashtags and keywords in your caption to describe what the post is about.
- Check Account Status if reach from non-followers suddenly falls.
Explore vs your Feed
Your Feed is mostly posts from accounts you follow, with some suggested posts mixed in. Explore is the opposite: mostly posts from accounts you don't follow, chosen because Instagram thinks you'll like them.
For a business that means two different jobs. Posts aimed at your followers keep existing customers coming back. Posts with a chance in Explore need to make sense to a stranger in a second: a clear image or opening shot, a topic people already care about and a reason to save or share. Reels and carousels with practical tips often do both jobs at once.
Common questions
Can I pay to be on the Explore page?
Not organically. Organic Explore recommendations are chosen by Instagram's ranking system. Ads can appear in Explore, but they are labelled as sponsored and paid for separately.
Why does my Explore page show things I'm not interested in?
It is based on your past activity. You can tap Not interested on a post, and Instagram also lets you adjust the topics it thinks you're into.
Is Explore the same as the Reels tab?
No. Both show recommendations from accounts you don't follow, but Explore is a grid of photos and reels, while the Reels tab plays one reel after another.
