What is youTube Shorts?
Also called YouTube Short, Shorts, YT Shorts.
YouTube Shorts are short videos on YouTube, up to 3 minutes long with a square or vertical aspect ratio, shown in a swipeable Shorts feed as well as on your channel.
Why it matters
Shorts let a small business be found on YouTube without making long videos. They can be recommended to people who have never seen your channel, and the same vertical clips you make for Reels or TikTok can often be reused. For a channel with longer videos, Shorts are also a way to point new viewers towards them.
Example
A kitchen fitter posts a 45-second Short showing a worktop going in from start to finish, sped up, with a title naming the material. Viewers who like it click through to the channel and find a longer video on choosing worktops.
What counts as a Short
YouTube's help centre says a Short can be up to 3 minutes long, with a square or vertical aspect ratio. On standard channels, videos uploaded after 15 October 2024 that meet both rules are treated as Shorts automatically.
Shorts longer than one minute with an active copyright claim of any kind are blocked, which means they won't play or be recommended until the claim is resolved. If you use music or clips you don't own, keep that in mind.
How to upload a YouTube Short
From a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio, click Create, then Upload videos, and choose a vertical or square video of 3 minutes or less. In the YouTube app on a phone:
- Sign in to the YouTube app.
- Tap Create, then select Short.
- Hold the capture button, or tap it to start and again to stop recording.
- Add music, filters or effects, then tap Done to preview.
- Tap Next and add a title of up to 100 characters, and choose your privacy setting.
- Tap Upload Short to publish, or save it as a draft.
Shorts vs Reels vs TikTok
All three are vertical short-form video with a recommendation feed, so one well-made clip can often go to all of them. The differences are in limits, sounds and audiences. Shorts live on YouTube, so a Short can lead viewers to your longer videos and to search.
Zolyp can create, schedule and publish YouTube Shorts as well as standard videos to a connected channel.
If you post the same clip in all three places, export a clean version without another app's watermark and write a title or caption suited to each platform. YouTube viewers often find Shorts through search, so a plain, descriptive title helps there more than a clever one.
Tips and mistakes to avoid
- Start with the result or the most surprising moment.
- Write a plain title that says what the video shows, as people search YouTube.
- Use original or properly licensed audio to avoid claims.
- Keep text away from the bottom, where the title and buttons sit.
- Link related Shorts to a longer video when you have one.
- Avoid horizontal video, which won't be treated as a Short.
- Avoid vague titles such as "New video".
- Give it time: it can take a while for YouTube to learn who your videos suit.
