What is a mention?
Also called tag, @mention.
A mention is including another account's @username in a post, caption, comment or story, which links to their profile and usually notifies them.
Why it matters
Mentions connect your post to the people in it: a supplier, a collaborator, a venue or a happy customer. They let those accounts see and share your post with their own followers, and they show your audience who you work with. Used carelessly, they look like spam and can annoy the people you tag.
Example
A caterer posts photos from a wedding and mentions the venue and the florist in the caption. Both reshare it to their Stories, and the caterer's post reaches their followers too.
Mention vs tag
People use the words loosely, but on Instagram they're different. A mention is an @username typed into a caption, comment or story. A tag is added with Tag people, attached to the photo itself, so the post can also show up on that person's profile in their tagged posts.
On X, LinkedIn, Threads and TikTok, typing @ and choosing the account is how you mention someone. On LinkedIn you can mention people, companies and schools.
Limits and controls
Instagram lets you mention up to 20 people in each photo or video in your story, and a single comment can't include more than 5 @mentions. Most platforms also let people choose who can mention or tag them, so a mention might not go through if the other account has limited it.
How to use mentions well
Mention people when it's genuinely useful to them or to your readers.
- Credit suppliers, partners, venues and photographers when their work is in the post.
- Mention customers only with their permission, especially in photos.
- Mention local businesses when you're part of the same event or offer.
- Use mentions in replies to keep a conversation clear.
- Check you've picked the right account before posting. Similar handles are common.
Mistakes to avoid
A mention sends a notification, so every one should be worth the interruption.
- Tagging big brands or celebrities who have nothing to do with the post, hoping for attention.
- Mentioning lots of followers in one comment to push a giveaway or offer.
- Tagging people in photos they didn't agree to appear in.
- Mentioning someone in a complaint in public when a direct message would sort it out.
Mentions in captions vs comments
Where you put a mention changes who sees it. A mention in a caption is part of the post, so everyone who sees the post sees it, and the person you mention can usually share it. A mention in a comment or reply is part of the conversation underneath, and is best for answering someone or bringing a colleague into a discussion. In Stories, a mention lets the person you mention share your story to their own. If you want a partner to appear as a co-author of a post on Instagram, a collab post does that more fully than a mention.
Common questions
Does the person get notified when I mention them?
Usually, yes. Most platforms notify the account you mention, unless that account has limited who can mention or tag them.
What is the difference between a mention and a hashtag?
A mention points to one specific account. A hashtag points to a topic, grouping every post that uses the same tag.
Can a mention help my reach?
Indirectly. If the account you mention reshares your post, their followers see it. That only happens when the mention is relevant and the post is worth sharing.
