What is a username (handle)?
Also called handle, @handle, social media handle, username.
A username, or handle, is the unique name that identifies an account on a platform, written after an @ sign, such as @rosebakery. It appears in your profile's web address and is what people type to mention you.
Why it matters
Your handle is how customers find you, tag you and remember you. If it's the same on every platform, people can guess it; if it's long, full of underscores or different everywhere, they tag the wrong account or give up. Changing it later is possible but breaks old links and printed materials, so it's worth choosing well the first time.
Example
A Karachi bakery finds @rosebakery taken, so it uses @rosebakerykhi on Instagram, TikTok, X and Threads, and prints that one handle on its boxes.
How to choose a handle
Check the handle you want on every platform you might use before you settle on it, even ones you're not using yet.
- Use your business name, or as close as you can get.
- Keep it short and easy to spell when you say it out loud.
- If it's taken, add your town, area or trade (khi, ldn, cafe, studio) rather than random numbers.
- Avoid characters that look like typos, such as double underscores or a mix of periods and underscores.
- Use the same handle everywhere it's available.
Username rules on major platforms
Each platform has its own rules on length, characters and how often you can change your handle.
- X: up to 15 characters, using letters, numbers and underscores only. You change it on the web (Settings and privacy, then Account, then Username), not in the mobile app. Your old handle becomes available to others straight away, and your followers and messages are unaffected. Your display name is separate and can be up to 50 characters.
- TikTok: you can change your username once every 30 days. It can contain letters, numbers, underscores and periods, but can't end with a period. Changing it also changes your profile link.
- Instagram: usernames can include periods, numbers and underscores, which helps when the name you want is taken. You change it from Edit profile.
Handle vs display name
Most platforms show two names. The handle (@rosebakerykhi) is unique and used in links and mentions. The display name (Rose Bakery) is the friendly name shown above it, which usually doesn't need to be unique and can include spaces. Put your full business name in the display name and keep the handle short.
Before you change your handle
Old links and mentions may stop working, and on some platforms someone else can claim your old name right away. Update your website, email signature, Google Business Profile, packaging and any printed QR codes, and tell your followers in a post so they aren't confused.
Protecting your handle
Even if you don't plan to use a platform yet, it can be worth registering your handle there so someone else doesn't take it. Use a business email address you control, not a personal one, and store the login safely so staff changes don't lock you out. Turn on two-factor authentication on every account: a hijacked handle is hard to get back. If someone is impersonating your business with a similar handle, report it to the platform through its impersonation reporting option.
Common questions
What is the difference between a username and a handle?
None in practice. "Handle" is the informal word for your @username, the unique name in your profile's web address.
What if my business name is already taken?
Add something meaningful, such as your town, area or trade, rather than random numbers. On Instagram, adding periods, numbers, underscores or abbreviations can also help you find a name that isn't in use.
Does changing my handle lose my followers?
No. On X, for example, changing your username doesn't affect your followers, messages or replies. But old links and @mentions using the previous name may no longer lead to you.
