What is a social media bio?
Also called profile bio, Instagram bio, bio.
A social media bio is the short description on a profile, shown near your name and profile picture, that tells visitors who you are, what you offer and what to do next.
Why it matters
Your bio is read by almost everyone who visits your profile, often before they look at a single post. In a line or two it has to answer "is this for me?" and "how do I buy or book?". A clear bio turns profile visits into follows, messages and website clicks; a vague one wastes them.
Example
A home bakery in Lahore: "Custom birthday cakes and cupcakes in Lahore. Order 3 days ahead. Delivery across DHA and Gulberg. Order form below."
What to put in a business bio
You have very little space, so cover the essentials in roughly this order.
- What you do, in plain words: "Family dentist", not "Smile journeys".
- Who it's for or where you are: a town, area or type of customer.
- One reason to choose you: a speciality, a guarantee, opening hours or how long you've been going.
- What to do next: "Book below", "DM to order", "Menu at the link".
- Your link, set up so it goes somewhere useful.
Bio length limits
Instagram bios can be up to 150 characters, and X bios up to 160. Other apps give a similar amount of space, so write short and cut every word that isn't doing a job. Contact buttons, addresses and categories often have their own fields on business profiles, so you don't need to squeeze them into the bio text.
Bio examples for small businesses
Plain beats clever. These follow the same pattern: what, where or who, why, next step.
- Salon: "Hair colour and cuts for curly hair. Clifton, Karachi. Tue to Sun, 11 to 8. Book online below."
- Accountant: "Tax returns and bookkeeping for freelancers and small shops. Fixed fees. Free 15-minute call: link below."
- Café: "Specialty coffee and all-day breakfast. Dog friendly. Open 7am daily. Menu and directions below."
- Online shop: "Hand-poured soy candles. Ships nationwide in 2 days. New scents every month."
Common mistakes
Most bios go wrong by trying to be clever or by going stale.
- A slogan with no clue what you actually sell.
- Out-of-date hours, phone numbers or offers.
- A different description on every platform, so the business seems inconsistent.
- A dozen emojis in place of words.
- No next step, so interested visitors leave.
Keeping your bio up to date
A bio isn't something you write once. Review it whenever something changes: new opening hours, a new location, a seasonal offer, a new service or a new link. Put a reminder in your content calendar at the start of each month to check every profile, and keep a master version of your bio in one document so every platform says the same thing. If you run an offer, it's often better to mention it in a pinned post and keep the bio for things that stay true.
Common questions
Should I use emojis in my bio?
A few can help separate lines or add personality, if that fits your brand voice. Don't use them instead of words: a visitor should understand what you do without decoding symbols.
Should my bio be the same on every platform?
Keep the core description the same so people recognise you, then adjust the tone and the call to action for each app. A LinkedIn Page can be more formal than a TikTok profile.
What words should I include?
The words a customer would type when looking for you, such as your trade and your town. They help people searching inside the app recognise you as the right result.
