What is a safe zone?

Also called safe area, title safe area, Reels safe zone.

A safe zone is the part of an image or video where text, logos and faces won't be hidden by app buttons, captions or cropping, usually the centre of the frame, away from the top, bottom and edges.

Why it matters

Full-screen formats such as Stories, reels, TikTok and Shorts lay buttons, your username and the caption over the video. Banners and profile grids crop images differently on phones, computers and TVs. If your price, offer or face sits in the wrong place, it gets covered or cut off, and the post loses its point.

Example

A salon's reel puts "20% off colour this week" near the bottom of the frame, where the caption and buttons cover it. Moving the text to the upper middle of the frame makes it readable.

Published safe zone guidelines

Not every platform publishes exact numbers for ordinary posts, but these official figures are a good guide.

  • Instagram Reels ads (Meta): leave roughly 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% on each side free of text, logos and other key elements, so they aren't covered by the profile icon or call-to-action button. Organic reels have similar overlays, so the same margins are a sensible starting point.
  • YouTube channel banner: upload at least 2048 x 1152 pixels (16:9), and keep text and logos inside the central 1235 x 338 pixel area, because the edges are cropped on some devices and views. Keep the file at 6 MB or less.

How to keep content in the safe zone

A few habits stop most problems before you post.

  1. Put text, prices and logos in the middle of the frame, a little above centre for vertical video.
  2. Keep faces and products away from the very top and bottom edges.
  3. Make a simple template with the unsafe areas shaded, and design on top of it.
  4. Preview the post on your phone, in the app, before publishing.
  5. Check how the cover looks as a cropped preview on your profile grid.

Common mistakes

Safe zone problems usually come from designing on a computer and never checking on a phone.

  • On-screen captions placed at the very bottom, where the post caption covers them.
  • Logos in the top corner, where the username or close button sits.
  • Banner text spread across the full width, so it's cut off on phones.
  • Re-posting a 16:9 video in a 9:16 format, so the edges are cropped away.

Safe zones for text-heavy posts

Quote cards, offers and event posters carry most of their message in text, so they suffer most when cropped. Leave a generous margin on every side, keep the most important words in the centre, and use large type that can be read at phone size. If a design will be shared as both a square feed post and a vertical Story, build the vertical version separately rather than stretching the square one, so you can move the text into the safe area for each format.

Common questions

Is there one safe zone for every platform?

No. Each app places its buttons and text differently, and layouts change. Keeping key content in the centre of the frame, away from the top and bottom, works reasonably well everywhere.

Do safe zones matter for normal posts, or only ads?

Both. Meta's published figures are for ads, but organic reels, Stories and TikTok videos are also covered by buttons, usernames and captions, so the same care pays off.

What is the safe area on a YouTube banner?

At the minimum banner size of 2048 x 1152 pixels, the safe area for text and logos is 1235 x 338 pixels in the centre.
