What is link in bio?

Also called bio link, link in profile, link-in-bio page.

Link in bio is the clickable website link on a social media profile, and the phrase people use in posts to send followers there when a post itself can't carry a clickable link.

Why it matters

Your profile link is often the main way people get from a social post to your website, booking page or shop. On Instagram, the reliable places for a clickable link are your profile and the link sticker in Stories, which is why so many captions end with "link in bio". If that link is broken, slow or points to the wrong page, interested people simply give up.

Example

A yoga studio's post says "New beginners' course starts Monday. Book through the link in our bio." The bio link goes straight to the course booking page, not the studio's home page.

Where your profile link goes on each platform

Every major app has a place for a website on your profile, but the rules differ.

  • Instagram: go to your profile, tap Edit profile, and add your website. Stories can also carry a link sticker, which all accounts can use.
  • Threads: you can add up to five links to your bio.
  • X: Edit profile has a website field, alongside your name, bio and location.
  • TikTok: whether you can show a clickable website on your profile depends on your account type, and TikTok ties it to business accounts that have completed verification in some markets. Check Edit profile in the app.
  • Facebook and LinkedIn Pages: both have a website field in the Page's details, and links in posts are clickable.

One link or a link-in-bio page?

If you can only show one link, you have two choices. Point it at the single page that matches what you're promoting right now, and change it when the promotion changes. Or point it at a simple landing page with a few buttons: book, shop, menu, contact.

A landing page saves you editing the bio every week, but each extra button is another decision for the visitor. Keep it to the handful of things people actually come for, and put the current offer at the top.

Best practices

The link only works if the page behind it does.

  • Test the link on your phone after every change. Most people will tap it on a phone.
  • Make sure the page loads fast and works without zooming.
  • Match the words: if the post says "book a table", the first thing on the page should be booking.
  • Add UTM parameters so your website analytics show how many visits came from each platform.
  • Mention what they'll find: "Full menu at the link in our bio" beats "Link in bio".

Common questions

Why do Instagram posts say "link in bio"?

Because the dependable places for a clickable link on Instagram are your profile and the link sticker in Stories. A feed post's caption isn't the place to send people to a website, so captions point to the profile link instead.

Do I need a paid link-in-bio tool?

No. A single link to the right page on your own website works well, and a simple page on your site with a few buttons does the same job as most tools. A tool is only worth it if you need features your website can't offer.

How do I know if people use my bio link?

Add UTM parameters to the link so your website analytics can show visits from each platform. Some apps also show link taps in their own insights, for example in Instagram Stories insights.
