How is Pinterest different from other social platforms?

Pinterest's own business team describes it plainly: people use Pinterest as they would use a search engine. They arrive with a plan in mind (a kitchen, a party, an outfit, a gift) and search for ideas. That changes the job. On Instagram or TikTok you're trying to interrupt someone's scrolling; on Pinterest you're trying to be the answer when they search.

Pins also last much longer. Pinterest's help centre says there's no set engagement window for Pins: a Pin can pick up saves and clicks hours, days, months or years after you publish it, and good Pins can resurface every season. So a Pinterest plan is closer to a website content plan than a social posting plan. Each Pin is a small, long-lived page that should match a search and lead somewhere useful.

The practical result for a small business: you don't need to be entertaining every day, and you don't need a big following before Pins get seen. You need clear, useful Pins, written in the words your customers search, and a steady supply of new ones.

What goal should a small business set on Pinterest?

Pick one main goal per quarter. Pinterest Analytics measures several things, and each goal maps to a different number. The definitions below are Pinterest's own.

  • Online shops usually start with outbound clicks and then measure sales on the site.
  • Service businesses (designers, planners, trades) usually start with outbound clicks to a portfolio or enquiry page.
  • Bloggers, cooks and teachers often care about saves first, because saved Pins keep getting shown.

How do you choose keywords and boards?

Your keywords decide where your Pins appear, and your boards group those keywords into themes. Our Pinterest SEO guide covers the research in detail; the strategy step is choosing a short list you'll actually build on.

Pinterest Create's best-practice page suggests being niche and specific with boards and aiming for 20 to 100 Pins per board or board section, with your most representative Pins in the first two rows. That's a useful planning limit: three to six focused boards you can fill properly beat twenty half-empty ones.

  1. Write down the 10 to 20 things customers ask for or plan before they buy from you, in their words, not yours.
  2. Type each one into Pinterest search and note the suggestions that appear. These are real searches.
  3. Group the phrases into three to six themes. Each theme becomes a board, named in plain search words.
  4. Give each board a short description using the main phrases, written as a sentence a person would read.
  5. Map one page on your website to each theme, so Pins on that board have somewhere sensible to link.

What does a weekly Pinterest routine look like?

Pinterest Create advises publishing regularly, ideally on a weekly basis, and Pinterest's business blog says to focus on the content itself rather than a fixed number of Pins per week. Choose a number you can keep for a year. Our suggestion is to start with three to five fresh Pins a week and raise it only once that feels easy; the right figure is the one you won't abandon in March.

Fresh matters. Pinterest's help centre recommends publishing your own fresh, new content and warns against repeatedly saving the same Pins or uploading content that already exists on Pinterest, which can get an account flagged as spam. Making a new image for an old blog post or product counts as fresh; re-saving yesterday's Pin to five boards does not.

If you schedule inside Pinterest itself, its help centre says you can schedule a Pin up to 30 days ahead and have up to 10 Pins scheduled at a time, so a weekly batch fits comfortably.

  1. Monday: pick this week's Pins from your keyword list and seasonal plan.
  2. Make the images or short videos in one sitting, vertical and in a 2:3 shape for images, as Pinterest recommends.
  3. Write a title and description for each, with the search phrase near the start of the title.
  4. Link each Pin to the exact page it shows, not your home page.
  5. Schedule them across the week, then spend ten minutes answering comments.

How do you plan around seasons and dates?

Because people plan ahead on Pinterest, your seasonal Pins need to be live before the moment, not on the day. Pinterest Create's fundamentals page suggests planning your content calendar 45 to 60 days in advance, and Pinterest's 2026 holiday guide says festive activity spikes as early as September.

Write your year's important dates on one page: your busy seasons, the holidays your customers shop or plan for, and any launches. Then count back about two months from each and put a 'start Pinning' note in the calendar. Our Pinterest seasonal marketing guide has a month-by-month version.

Worked example: a one-page plan for a garden design studio (hypothetical)

This is an invented business to show how the pieces fit together. Every name and number is made up for illustration.

Part of the planWhat the studio wrote
Goal this quarterMore visits to the 'small garden design' service page, measured by outbound clicks
Customers' searchessmall garden ideas, low maintenance garden, garden seating area, garden lighting ideas, spring planting plan
BoardsSmall garden ideas; Low maintenance gardens; Garden seating and patios; Garden lighting; Seasonal planting
Weekly routineFour new Pins a week: two project photos, one tip list, one planting plan, made every Monday
LinksEach Pin links to the matching project page or blog post, tagged with UTM parameters
Seasonal datesStart spring planting Pins in January; start outdoor lighting and party Pins in late summer for autumn evenings
Monthly reviewOutbound clicks by board, top five Pins by saves, which pages got Pinterest visits

How do you review results each month?

Pinterest Analytics shows the last 30 days by default and lets you look back over roughly the past year and a half. Its real-time estimates for the last 48 hours can drop later, so judge on settled numbers. Video metrics only appear when you filter to video Pins.

Keep the review short and decide something at the end of it.

  • Which five Pins earned the most outbound clicks or saves? Make more Pins on those topics, with new images.
  • Which boards get impressions but few clicks? Check the Pins link to the right page and that the page loads quickly.
  • Which pages on your site get Pinterest visits? Make sure they have a clear next step: buy, book, enquire or sign up.
  • Are seasonal Pins live early enough? Move next season's start date earlier if they peaked after the moment had passed.

Where Zolyp fits (our product)

Zolyp is our product, so weigh this section with that in mind. The hard part of this plan is the weekly supply of fresh Pins, which is the part Zolyp is built for. Zolyp publishes approved posts to Pinterest alongside Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and the other platforms it supports, and its Calendar lets you drag a post to a new time without breaking the rest of the plan.

In Create you type an idea, choose the platforms each post is for (Pinterest included) and ask for up to six posts at once; Zolyp writes the caption, designs an on-brand visual and adds hashtags, fitted to each platform. Nothing goes live without your sign-off. Lite is $9 a month per brand for scheduling posts you make yourself; the plans that create posts start at $29 a month, with a 3-day free trial and no card required.

Common questions

Is Pinterest worth it for a small business?

It suits businesses whose customers plan before they buy: homes and gardens, food, weddings and events, fashion, beauty, crafts, travel and gifts. If nobody searches for ideas around what you sell, other platforms may be a better use of time.

How many Pins should a business post each week?

Pinterest doesn't set a number. Its guidance is to publish regularly, ideally weekly, and focus on fresh content rather than a quota. Choose a number you can keep up all year.

Do I need followers to succeed on Pinterest?

Followers help, but Pins are mainly found through search and recommendations. Good keywords, clear images and a steady flow of new Pins matter more at the start.

Should I use a business account?

Yes. A business account gives you Pinterest Analytics, Pinterest Trends, scheduling and ads, and lets you claim your website. Switching is free.

How long does Pinterest take to work?

Longer than most platforms, because Pins can keep gaining saves and clicks for months. Give a plan at least a full quarter before judging it, and review monthly in between.
