Pinterest SEO: how to get your Pins found in search

Pinterest SEO means writing your Pins and boards in the words people search for. Pinterest's own business guidance is to fill in every Pin field, use relevant keywords in titles and descriptions, give every board a clear title and description, add topic tags, and link to a page that matches the Pin. Find keywords in the search bar and Pinterest Trends.

Why does search matter so much on Pinterest?

Pinterest's business team puts it plainly: "People use Pinterest as they would use a search engine." People start with a broad idea, such as living room ideas, and narrow it down using the suggestions Pinterest shows them. Your Pins show up when the words on them match those searches.

Pins also last. Pinterest says there's no set engagement window: a Pin can pick up saves and clicks hours, days, months or even years after it's published, and older Pins can suddenly rise again with the seasons. Good keywords keep working long after the day you post.

How do you find Pinterest keywords?

You don't need a paid tool. Pinterest gives you three free places to look, and your customers give you a fourth:

  1. Type your topic into Pinterest's search bar and note the suggestions it offers as you type. Those are the phrases people use.
  2. Open Pinterest Trends from a business account: select the menu icon at the top left and, under Analyze performance, select Pinterest Trends. Search a keyword to see how interest has moved over up to two years, and compare up to four terms at once.
  3. Check Pinterest Analytics for your top Pins, then reuse the wording that already works.
  4. Write down the words customers use in emails, reviews and questions. They're often more specific than your own product names.
  • Trends shows relative interest, scaled from 0 to 100, not absolute search counts.
  • Some Trends features are only available in certain regions, and the audience-based view appears only once your audience is large enough.

How do you write Pin titles and descriptions for search?

Pinterest's advice is to always include a title and a description with relevant keywords, so it can understand what the Pin is about. Titles can be up to 100 characters, but only the first 40 are likely to show in feeds, so the main keyword goes first.

Descriptions don't appear in the home or search feed, but Pinterest says its algorithm uses them to judge relevance. Write one or two plain sentences: what the idea is, who it's for, and what they'll find when they click. Staying within 500 characters fits every limit Pinterest publishes. How should you set up boards for search?

Boards show up in search results too. Pinterest's guidance is to give every board a proper title and description in clear, descriptive language, so it reaches the right people.

  1. Name boards after topics people search for, not internal labels or campaign names.
  2. Add a one- or two-sentence description: open the board, click the ellipsis icon next to its name, choose Edit board, write it and click Done.
  3. Save each Pin to the single board that best matches it.
  4. Use board sections to split a large board into narrower topics.

What else helps Pinterest understand your Pins?

Pinterest's own troubleshooting guide for Pin performance lists several things beyond the words on the Pin:

  • Add topic tags when they're offered, up to 10 per Pin.
  • Make the image, text and keywords on the Pin match the page it links to.
  • Link to a page with more about that exact idea, not just your homepage, and fix broken links.
  • Don't block Pinterestbot, so Pinterest can see where your Pins link.
  • Keep your site fast: Pinterest suggests checking that your domain loads in under 4 seconds.
  • Claim your website so Pins from it are tied to your profile.
  • Avoid uploading the same content again and again; repeated duplicates can be treated as spam.
  • Write Pins in the language of the audience you want to reach.

How do you improve Pins you've already published?

Pinterest recommends going back over published Pins and adding relevant keywords to the title, description, board title, board description and website URL. Since Pins can keep earning attention for years, this is often a better use of an hour than making new ones.

  1. In Pinterest Analytics, sort your top Pins by impressions, then by outbound clicks.
  2. Open a Pin with good impressions but few clicks, click the ellipsis icon and select Edit Pin.
  3. Rewrite the title so it starts with the search phrase, and tighten the description.
  4. Check the link still works and still matches the Pin, then click Save.

How do you plan for seasonal searches?

Seasonal ideas are searched well before the date. Pinterest Trends includes a Moments view of seasonal and cultural events, and Pinterest notes that relevant Pins can resurface year after year. Plan seasonal Pins early, then keep adding fresh ones. Pinterest advises adding new content every week rather than chasing a set number of Pins.

Common questions

Do hashtags help Pinterest SEO?

Pinterest lets you include hashtags in a description, but its business guidance focuses on keywords in titles, descriptions and boards, plus topic tags. Treat hashtags as optional.

How long does it take for a Pin to show up in search?

There's no fixed timeline. Pinterest says there's no set engagement window: a Pin can gain engagement hours, days, months or years after it's published.

Do I need a business account for Pinterest SEO?

Not to write good titles and descriptions. You do need one for Pinterest Trends and Pinterest Analytics, which show you which keywords and Pins work.

Should I pin the same image several times?

Avoid it. Pinterest warns that repeatedly saving the same Pins or uploading content that already exists can get flagged as spam. Make a new Pin with a fresh image instead.
