How do you create a Pinterest board?

Boards are collections for your Pins, and you can make one at any time or while you save a Pin. The steps are the same for personal and business accounts. On a computer:

  1. Log in to your Pinterest account.
  2. Click the square-plus icon in the navigation bar on the left of the screen, or click Create from your profile.
  3. Select Board.
  4. Enter a name. Pinterest may suggest one based on your activity; you can edit it before you create the board.
  5. Toggle Keep this board secret if only you should see it, and add collaborators if you'd like.
  6. Click Create.
  • In the app: tap the plus icon, tap Board, enter a name, choose the secret and collaborator options, then tap Create at the top right
  • While saving a Pin on a computer: hover over the Pin, click the chevron next to the suggested board name, click Create board, name it and click Create
  • While saving a Pin in the app: open the Pin, tap Save, tap Create board, name it and tap Create

How should you name and describe a business board?

Pinterest's business team says to give every board a proper title and description, because people can find boards in their search results too. Use clear, descriptive words your customers would search for, such as "Small kitchen storage ideas" rather than "Autumn drop". To add or change the description:

  1. Click your profile photo at the top right of the screen, then click Boards.
  2. Open the board and click the ellipsis icon next to its name.
  3. Select Edit board.
  4. Edit the board name and write a one- or two-sentence description of what's on it.
  5. Click the plus icon to choose a board cover, the largest image people see on your profile.
  6. Click Done.
  • The header image (a featured image at the top of the board) can only be changed in the Android or iOS app, and the board needs at least one Pin first
  • In the app, the option is called Edit board and header image

How do you add sections to a board?

Sections split one board into smaller groups, which suits a business with one broad topic and several product lines. For example, a "Wedding cakes" board could have sections for naked cakes, tiered cakes and cupcake towers.

  1. Click your profile picture at the top right and open the board.
  2. Click the plus icon at the bottom of the screen and select Section.
  3. Enter a name for the section and click Add.
  4. Click Organize at the top of the board and select the Pins you want to move.
  5. Click Move at the top of the page, then click Save next to the section.
  • In the app: open the board, tap the plus icon, tap Section, enter a name (or pick a suggested one), tap Next, select the Pins and tap Done

How do you make a board private or share it with your team?

Only you, and anyone you invite, can see a private board. That makes private boards useful for planning seasonal Pins before you publish them. To create a group board, invite people to one of your existing boards:

  1. Open your profile and click the board.
  2. Click the plus circle icon below the board name.
  3. Search by name, username or email address and click Invite, or click Copy link and send the link yourself.
  4. To set what collaborators can do, click the plus circle icon above your Pins, then the chevron next to Collaborators can.
  5. Choose Do (almost) everything (add, move and delete Pins and sections) or Save and comment (save and organise Pins, comment and react), then click Done.
  • To make an existing board private: open it, click the ellipsis icon, click Edit info and settings, toggle Make this board private and click Done
  • Saving to a private board doesn't notify the person you saved from, and the Pin's count doesn't increase
  • To remove a collaborator, click the profile pictures below the board name and click Remove next to their name

How do you archive or delete a board, and what can go wrong?

Archive a board you might want again; delete one you're sure you never need. Archived boards move to the bottom of your profile, don't show on your public profile and can't take new Pins, but you can unarchive them at any time.

  1. Open your profile and click the board.
  2. Click the ellipsis icon next to the board name.
  3. Select Archive, then click Archive again to confirm.
  4. To delete instead, select Edit board, click Delete at the bottom left, then Delete forever.
  • Deleting a board deletes every Pin on it, not just the board
  • You have seven days to restore a deleted board from Recently deleted on your profile's Saved tab. On a business account this only works on a computer
  • Private boards and their Pins can't be promoted through Pinterest ads, so make a board public before you plan to advertise its Pins
  • The board cover can only be changed on a computer or in the iOS app, and the header image only in the Android or iOS app

Common questions

What's the difference between a secret board and a private board?

They're the same thing. Pinterest's help centre now calls them private boards, while the create-a-board screen still offers a Keep this board secret toggle. Only you and people you invite can see them.

What happens to my Pins if I delete a board?

They're deleted too. If you only want the board out of view, archive it instead: archived boards keep their Pins and can be unarchived at any time.

Can I get a deleted Pinterest board back?

Yes, within seven days, from the Recently deleted section of your profile's Saved tab. Business accounts can only restore boards on a computer.

Can I promote Pins from a private board?

No. Pinterest says private boards and Pins can't be promoted through ads. A Pin from a group board also has to be saved to one of your own boards before you can promote it.

Can other people add Pins to my board?

Yes, if you invite them as collaborators. You choose whether they can do (almost) everything or only save and comment.
