What's inside

  • A post log: date, platform, format, pillar, what the post was, a link to it, reach, engagements, link clicks, bookings that mentioned it and a note
  • Monthly totals by platform, so you can compare where your time goes with what comes back
  • A learnings sheet that turns the log into decisions
  • A filled example for Wag & Wash, a fictional dog groomer (every figure is made up), and a blank CSV of each sheet

How to use it

  1. Add a row the day each post goes out, with a link to the live post.
  2. Fill the results a week later, from each platform's own insights, so every post has had the same time to collect them.
  3. Use the same metric names every time, even if platforms label them differently.
  4. Record what happened off the platform too, such as bookings or enquiries that mentioned a post.
  5. At the end of the month, total each platform and write two or three learnings.
  6. Use the learnings to plan next month, and check them against the log again in three months.

Tips

  • Wag & Wash, its staff and every figure in the example are made up. The results show how to read a log, not what to expect.
  • Fill results at the same age for every post, such as seven days after publishing. Comparing a post from this morning with one from last month isn't fair.
  • Platforms count reach and engagement in slightly different ways, so compare platforms on things you count yourself, such as bookings and link clicks.
  • Ask new customers how they heard about you, and add the answer to the bookings column. It's the most useful number in the log.
  • Log Stories on the day they go out. They disappear after 24 hours, and so does the easy way to find them.
  • Zolyp, which makes this template, shows each post's status from draft to live in its Calendar, and its Analyze feature writes a weekly report on connected accounts. Keep this log for anything that happens off the platforms, such as bookings.

Common questions

What is a social media post tracker?

A log of every post you publish: the date, platform, format, topic, a link to it and its results. It answers 'what did we post, and did it work?' without searching each platform.

What should I track for each post?

At minimum: date, platform, format, a link and one result that matters to the business, such as clicks, enquiries or bookings. Reach and engagements are useful for comparing posts on the same platform.

How is a post tracker different from a content calendar?

A calendar plans what will go out. A tracker records what did go out and what it did. Many businesses use both: plan in the calendar, then log the result in the tracker.

Are the figures in the example real?

No. The dog groomer and every figure are made up to show how a filled tracker reads.
