What's inside

  • Quarter goals: each goal, how you'll measure it, where you're starting from and the target
  • Monthly themes with key dates, campaigns, planned post counts, the content mix and budget notes
  • A 13-week plan with a focus and one key post for each week
  • An end-of-quarter review with the questions to answer before planning the next one
  • A filled example for Bloom & Bramble, a fictional florist (every figure is made up), and a blank CSV of each sheet

How to use it

  1. Start from the business goal for the quarter, such as more wedding enquiries, and write two or three social media goals that support it.
  2. Give each goal a measure, a starting number and a target you believe is reachable.
  3. Mark the quarter's key dates, then give each month one theme so the posts have a thread.
  4. Fill the 13-week plan with a focus and one key post per week. The daily detail belongs in your content calendar.
  5. Check progress at the end of each month, not only at the end of the quarter.
  6. In the last week, fill the review and carry the answers into next quarter's goals.

Tips

  • Bloom & Bramble and every figure in the example are made up. The targets show the layout, not what a florist should expect.
  • A quarter is long enough to see whether a change works and short enough to fix one that doesn't.
  • Keep this plan at the level of weeks. When it starts listing every post, it's become a content calendar.
  • Put the order-by date in every campaign post, and repeat it in the last week.
  • Holiday dates in the example come from our social media holidays calendar. Mothering Sunday moves every year, so check before you plan.
  • If you use Zolyp, our product, its calendar balances your content pillars across each month. A quarterly plan like this tells you which campaigns and dates to put in first.

Common questions

What is a quarterly social media plan?

A plan for the next three months that links your social media to the business's goals: two or three goals with measures, a theme and key dates for each month, a focus for each week and a review at the end.

What's the difference between a social media strategy and a quarterly plan?

A strategy sets the long-term direction: who you're for, why you post and which platforms you use. A quarterly plan decides what you'll do in the next 13 weeks to move it forward.

How many goals should a quarterly plan have?

Two or three. With more, the weekly plan can't give any of them enough attention, and the review becomes a list of half-finished things.

Are the figures in the example real?

No. The florist, its targets and its results are made up to show how a filled plan and review read.
