Which Save button should you use?
The Save button lets visitors save images from your website straight to Pinterest, so more people find your content there. It's one of five Pinterest add-ons, alongside the Follow button and the Pin, board and profile widgets. Pick the type first:
| Button type | What visitors do | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Image hover | The button appears when they hover over any image on the page | Blogs, recipes and portfolios with lots of images |
| Any image | They click the button, then choose any image from the page | A single button near the top of a post |
| One image | They save one image you've chosen in advance | A product page with one hero shot; needs more coding |

How do you add an image hover or any-image button?
These are Pinterest's steps using its add-on builder, which writes the code for you:
- Go to Pinterest's add-on builder.
- Under Button type, select Image hover or Any image.
- Tick Round and Large, and choose a language, if you want to change how the button looks.
- Test the button by clicking the sample image.
- Copy the code in the first box under the sample image and paste it where you want the button on your page.
- Copy the code in the second box and paste it just before the </body> tag on each page where the button should appear.

How do you add a one-image button?
A one-image button always saves the same picture, with the description you write:
- In the add-on builder, under Button type, select One image and choose the style.
- Add the URL of the web page that has the image.
- Open your site in a new window, right-click the image and select Copy Image URL.
- Paste the image URL into the Image field and write a description.
- Click Build It! to preview the button.
- Copy the code shown and paste it between the <body> and </body> tags of each page where the button should show.
- Images should be at least 110 pixels in one dimension and at least 200 pixels in the other
- On WordPress, Blogger, Tumblr, Wix or Squarespace, follow that platform's own directions for its Pinterest plug-in instead

How do you add or customise the button with code?
Pinterest's developer docs give the raw code. Include the pinit.js script once per page, however many Pinterest add-ons you use, then add an anchor with data-pin-do="buttonBookmark" where the button should go. These attributes change how it behaves:
- Don't put the pinit.js script on pages without Pinterest add-ons, and keep it off pages with sensitive material
- Custom-designed buttons must follow Pinterest's brand guidelines
| Attribute | What it does |
|---|---|
| data-pin-do | buttonBookmark lets visitors pick any image; buttonPin saves one image you set with the media attribute |
| data-pin-hover | Shows the button on hover over every image on the page (added to the pinit.js call) |
| data-pin-sticky | Set to false to turn off the sticky Save button on mobile, which is on by default with hover buttons |
| data-pin-round / data-pin-tall | Round red button, or a taller button (28 px rectangular, 32 px round) |
| data-pin-description | Your own description, up to 500 characters; only 75 to 100 show in grid view |
| data-pin-nopin | Stops one image being saved at all |
| data-pin-no-hover | Hides the hover button on one image, but it can still be saved |

Why isn't the Save button showing?
Work through these checks, most common first:
- Check the image is at least 120 by 120 pixels; smaller images don't get the hover button.
- Check the pinit.js script is on the page, once, and the snippet is just before the closing body tag.
- Check the image doesn't carry data-pin-nopin or data-pin-no-hover.
- On a phone, look for the sticky Save button rather than a hover button, unless data-pin-sticky is set to false.
- If you expected a Pin count, note that counts only show on one-image rectangular buttons, not round, hover or custom ones.
- Claim your website as well: whenever an image from a claimed site is saved, your profile picture appears with the Pin, it links to your profile and people see the option to follow you

Common questions
Can I stop people pinning certain images?
Yes. Add the data-pin-nopin attribute to an image and nobody can save it, and no hover button appears on it.
Does the Pinterest Save button work on mobile?
Yes. When hover buttons are on, Pinterest shows a sticky Save button on mobile devices. Add data-pin-sticky="false" to the pinit.js call to turn it off.
Can I set the description people see when they save?
Yes, with data-pin-description on the image. It takes up to 500 characters, but only 75 to 100 show in grid view, so put the important words first.
Can I add the Save button on Wix, Squarespace or WordPress?
Yes. Pinterest points you to the plug-ins on WordPress, Blogger, Tumblr, Wix and Squarespace; follow the directions each platform provides.
What's the smallest image the hover button works on?
120 by 120 pixels. For other Save buttons, images should be at least 110 pixels on one side and 200 on the other.
