GUIDE

Pinterest image sizes and Pin specs

Pinterest recommends a 2:3 aspect ratio, or 1000 by 1500 pixels, for standard image Pins, and warns that other ratios may get cut off in feeds. Image Pins can be BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF or WEBP files, up to 20 MB on the web. For full-screen video Pins it recommends 9:16, or 1080 by 1920 pixels. Pin titles take up to 100 characters.

What size should a Pinterest image be?

Pinterest is a vertical, mostly mobile feed, and its spec pages recommend shapes to match. These are the recommendations Pinterest publishes; it doesn't give a separate size for board covers or profile pictures on these pages.

  • Pinterest warns that images with a ratio beyond 2:3 may get cut off in people's feeds.
  • Its performance guide also recommends 2:3 for images, and for videos of 15 to 60 seconds.

What are Pinterest's safe zones?

Parts of a Pin can be covered by buttons and labels, depending on the device. Pinterest's specs give safe zones for both image and video Pins: keep text, logos and other key elements inside these margins so they stay visible everywhere.

  • The bottom margin is the largest, so don't put your headline or call to action at the very bottom of a full-screen Pin.
  • On image Pins with a white or near-white background, Pinterest adds a faint dark layer in light mode (black at 4% opacity). Black backgrounds get a faint white layer in dark mode (white at 10%). It doesn't apply to video.

How do multiple images work?

Pinterest handles several images differently depending on where you create the Pin. On the web you can upload up to 10 images at once, but each becomes a separate Pin. In the app, selecting several photos or videos stitches them into a single video Pin. Swipeable carousels with 2 to 5 images appear in Pinterest's ad specs, in 1:1 or 2:3, with each image up to 20 MB.

Can you fix the shape inside Pinterest?

Yes, within limits. When you create a Pin on a computer, click the pencil icon at the top right of the image or video to edit it: you can add text and change the aspect ratio there before you publish. In the app, the editing menu at the bottom of the screen adds text and other effects.

Do this before you publish. Once a Pin is live, Pinterest lets you edit its title, description, link and board, but not the image or video itself, so a badly cropped Pin has to be deleted and made again.

How do you design a Pin that works at a small size?

Most people scroll Pinterest on a phone, where a Pin is only a few centimetres wide. Pinterest's creative guidance suggests a simple layout:

  1. Start at 1000 x 1500 pixels, or 1080 x 1920 for full-screen video.
  2. Put the main visual in the middle, key words near the top and extra detail lower down, inside the safe zones.
  3. Make your logo or brand name visible without letting it take over.
  4. Use sharp, well-lit, high-resolution images. Pinterest warns that blurry or distorted images make an idea hard to see.
  5. Keep any text on the image short enough to read at phone size.

How Zolyp sizes Pins

Zolyp is our product, so weigh this section with that in mind. Zolyp designs vertical Pin images and checks each one before it's published to Pinterest: at least 600 by 900 pixels, no larger than 2,000 by 3,000, up to 20 MB, and carousels of up to 5 images that are all the same size.

Zolyp plans the week across your content themes, writes the copy and designs the visuals against your Brand Brain (your tone, colours and rules, saved once), then schedules and publishes to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads. Nothing goes out until you approve it. Plans that create the posts start at $29 a month, with a 3-day free trial and no card required.
