What do the three types of Rich Pins show?

Rich Pins sync information from your site and show it above and below the image when someone opens the Pin. If something changes on your page, the Rich Pin updates from time to time to match.

  • If a page has markup for more than one type, Pinterest shows them in this order of priority: product, then recipe, then article
  • An article must be a page of text, like a news story or blog post. Pinterest doesn't count listicles or pages that are mostly images
TypeWhat it adds to the PinMarkup Pinterest accepts
RecipeTitle, serving size, cook time, ratings, diet preference and ingredientsSchema.org or h-recipe

How do you set up article Rich Pins?

Article Rich Pins are the most common type for service businesses with a blog. Pinterest's required Open Graph fields are og:title, og:description and og:type set to "article", for example: <meta property="og:type" content="article" />

  1. Pick the pages you want as Rich Pins: blog posts and guides that are mostly text.
  2. Open a page in your browser, view the page source and search for og:title. Many sites already output Open Graph tags.
  3. If the tags are missing, add og:title, og:description and og:type (set to article) between the <head> and </head> tags of each page.
  4. Create a Pin that links to one of those pages, or wait for existing Pins to update.
  5. Allow up to 24 hours, then open the Pin and check for the headline, description and author.

How do you set up product Rich Pins?

Product Rich Pins send people to your site to buy, so the product must be available to buy directly on your site. Pinterest only shows the product details when the item is in stock, the price is accurate, the data was updated recently and you meet its merchant guidelines.

  1. Add og:title and og:type set to "product" to the head section of each product page.
  2. Add product:price:amount (for example 15.00) and product:price:currency (for example USD).
  3. Or use Schema.org Product markup with an Offer that includes price, priceCurrency and availability.
  4. Create a Pin from the product page and check the price and stock after 24 hours.
  • Sites hosted on Etsy, Teachers Pay Teachers or eBay don't need any markup; new Pins from them get product information within 24 hours
  • A product Pin may get a Best seller badge if it's one of the most purchased items in its category, or a Popular badge if it's one of the most clicked
  • Only product Pins created through a catalogue can be promoted as shopping ads. If you plan to advertise products, upload a catalogue as well

How do you set up recipe Rich Pins?

Recipe Rich Pins can also show whether a recipe is paleo, vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free. Add either Schema.org Recipe markup or h-recipe markup to each recipe page.

  1. Mark up the recipe name, description, yield (servings), ingredients and instructions using Schema.org Recipe or h-recipe.
  2. Place the markup in the head section of each recipe page, as Pinterest's help page instructs.
  3. To show star ratings, add aggregateRating with Schema.org. Pinterest doesn't support ratings through h-recipe.
  4. Save a Pin from the recipe page and check it after 24 hours.
  • Ratings only appear on iOS and Android, not on a computer

How do syncing and opting out work, and why isn't your Rich Pin showing?

Article and recipe Rich Pins update automatically when you edit your site. If you edit one of those Pins by hand on Pinterest, your edit overwrites the synced information. To switch Rich Pins off for one page, add this tag to that page: <meta name="pinterest-rich-pin" content="false" /> Remove it to switch them back on. It's not the same as the nopin attribute, which stops people saving an image at all.

  1. Wait a full 24 hours after adding tags before you troubleshoot.
  2. Check the tags are on the exact page the Pin links to, not just your homepage.
  3. For an article, check the page is mostly text rather than a listicle or gallery.
  4. For a product, check it's in stock, the price on the page matches your markup and it can be bought on your site.
  5. Check the page doesn't carry the pinterest-rich-pin false tag from an old setting.

Common questions

How long do Rich Pins take to appear?

Pinterest says it can take up to 24 hours for content from your site to sync to a Rich Pin after you add the tags.

Do my existing Pins become Rich Pins?

Yes. Pinterest says existing Pins that link to pages with the correct meta tags appear as Rich Pins, as well as new Pins.

Can I turn off Rich Pins for one page?

Yes. Add <meta name="pinterest-rich-pin" content="false" /> to that page. Other pages aren't affected, and removing the tag turns Rich Pins back on.

Do I need a catalogue for product Rich Pins?

No, markup on your product pages is enough for organic product Pins. You do need a catalogue if you want to promote products as shopping ads.

Why don't my recipe ratings show?

Ratings only work with Schema.org markup, not h-recipe, and they only appear on iOS and Android.
