What is saves?
Also called post saves, bookmarks.
Saves count how many times people used a platform's save or bookmark feature to keep a post to come back to later. On Instagram, saves are one of the interactions counted in a post's insights.
Why it matters
Someone who saves a post is telling you it was useful enough to return to. That makes saves a good sign of content with lasting value, such as tips, recipes, checklists and guides, and a hint about which topics your audience wants more of.
Example
A hypothetical accountant posts a carousel called 'Five receipts to keep for your tax return'. It reaches 3,000 accounts and gets 90 saves: 90 ÷ 3,000 × 100 = a 3% save rate, well above the 0.5% the account's other posts usually get.
How to calculate save rate
Raw saves grow with reach, so a save rate is fairer when you compare posts.
- Open the post's insights and note the saves and the number of unique accounts that saw it (reach, or Viewers on Instagram).
- Divide saves by reach and multiply by 100.
- Compare the save rate with your other posts of the same format, since carousels and reels behave differently.
Where to find it
On Instagram, tap a post on your profile, then View insights. Instagram defines Interactions as actions such as likes, comments, saves and shares, and you can tap each insight to see more detailed metrics. For an account-wide view, open Professional dashboard from your profile in the app, or on instagram.com select Dashboard, then Insights, and choose Content from the Insights dropdown.
Other platforms let people save or bookmark posts too, but whether the count is reported to you varies by platform and format. Check the post's own analytics before you plan around it.
What gets saved
Saves usually go to content people want to use later, rather than content they enjoyed once. Formats that suit this include step-by-step carousels, checklists, recipes, price or size guides, and short how-to videos.
Your most-saved posts are a list of what your audience finds useful. Sort your posts by save rate every month and look at the top five. Can one become a series? Can a saved tip become a longer guide, a video or a printable checklist? Saves are one of the clearest content briefs your audience gives you.
- Put the useful part in the post itself, not behind a link.
- Make the cover or first frame say what the post will help with.
- A light prompt such as 'Save this for your next order' reminds people the option exists.
Common mistakes
Saves are a quiet metric, so they are easy to overlook or over-read:
- Only checking likes and missing that a plain-looking tips post was saved far more than your prettiest photo.
- Asking for saves on posts with nothing worth keeping, which can feel like engagement bait.
- Comparing raw saves between a post with huge reach and one with small reach. Use the rate.
Common questions
Can I see who saved my post?
Instagram's insights show how many times a post was saved as part of its interactions. Treat saves as a count, not as a list of people you can contact.
Are saves better than likes?
For a small business they are often more telling, because saving takes a deliberate choice and suggests the post was useful. Both are worth tracking alongside comments, shares and clicks.
Do saves help a post reach more people?
Platforms don't publish exact ranking formulas, so no one outside can say how much weight saves carry. What you can see is your own data: compare the reach of posts with high save rates against your baseline over a few months.
