What do you need before connecting a feed?

The RSS option only appears for a claimed website, so this is a job for a Pinterest business account with your site already claimed.

  • A feed in RSS 2.x or RSS 1.x (RDF) format. Pinterest doesn't support Atom
  • Feed content in XML
  • A link to your claimed domain in every item
  • Good images in each item's image, enclosure or media:content tag, because that's where the Pin image comes from
  • Clear title and description tags, because they become the Pin title and description

What happens after you connect it?

Pinterest's help page sets out how the feed behaves:

  • New content usually appears as Pins within 24 hours of your feed updating
  • Older items in the feed are published first
  • Pinterest creates up to 200 Pins a day
  • You can add as many feeds as you like, as long as they match your claimed website, and each feed can go to a different board
  • Pins sent to a secret board aren't visible to other people on Pinterest

How do you set feeds up for a small business?

A few choices make automatic Pins more useful:

  1. Use one feed per topic or product category if your site offers them, and point each at a matching board.
  2. Check that each post's featured image is tall and clear, since it becomes the Pin.
  3. Write post titles and summaries with the words people search for, because they become the Pin title and description.
  4. Look at the first Pins it creates and fix the feed before more go out.
