How does Pinterest ad review work?
Pinterest's help and policy pages describe the process like this:
- Every new ad is reviewed against the advertising guidelines, which can take up to 24 hours
- Editing the targeting or ad description after you submit sends the ad back for review, which may take another 24 hours
- Some ads are reviewed by people and some automatically, for example ads from advertisers with a history of following the rules
- An ad can be rejected before it runs or after a campaign has started, for example after someone reports it
- Some ads get limited approval: they run with restrictions, such as only in certain regions or to people over a certain age
- Repeated problems can lead to advertiser removal, which ends access to the ad tools but not to the rest of Pinterest

What are the most common reasons ads get rejected?
Most small business rejections come from the editorial, landing page and promotion rules rather than banned products. The main ones in Pinterest's advertising guidelines:
- Low-quality user-generated content such as selfies and screenshots, and flashing or strobing effects, are also not allowed
- Targeting can't be based on sensitive categories such as health, ethnicity or religion, and ads can't target people under 18
| Area | What Pinterest doesn't allow |
|---|---|
| Image quality | Blurry or grainy images (it suggests at least 600 x 900 pixels), text too small to read, sideways images, poor crops |
| Text overlay | Images packed with text or too many fonts and colours (it suggests no more than 4 frames and 2 font styles or colours) |
| Fake features | Play or download buttons, notification icons, search bars or anything that mimics Pinterest's own buttons |
| Writing | Poor grammar, spelling mistakes, excessive capitals and symbols |
| Landing page | Sign-up walls the ad doesn't mention, pop-up ads, automatic downloads, forced redirects or made-for-ads sites |
| Consistency | An image, description and landing page that don't match, or a product that isn't on the page |
| Clickbait | Playing on fear, critiquing deficiencies, alarmist language or withholding information |
| Promotions | Discounts of more than 90%, hidden conditions, or promo messaging left running after the offer ends |
| Pinterest branding | Using the Pinterest wordmark or suggesting Pinterest sponsors your ad |

Which businesses face extra rules?
Some categories are banned outright and others are allowed with conditions. Examples from the guidelines:
- Not allowed: tobacco and vapes, weapons and fireworks, CBD products, political campaign ads, payday loans and selling social media followers
- Alcohol: allowed, but can't target minors or suggest drinking improves performance or social standing
- Contests and sweepstakes: can't require people to save a specific image or allow more than one entry per person when entry is a Pinterest action
- Financial products: must clearly disclose terms required by local law
- Weight loss: no weight loss language or imagery in ads, except approved healthcare advertisers promoting prescription GLP-1 medication in the US and Canada
- Credit, employment and housing ads: in certain markets they can't use actalike, age, gender or postal code targeting

How do you fix or appeal a rejected ad?
Work through it in this order:
- Open the notification in Ads Manager and the email Pinterest sent from ad-reviews@account.pinterest.com, and note the reason given.
- Find the matching section of Pinterest's advertising guidelines and check your image, description, landing page and targeting against it.
- If the problem is the image or video, create a new Pin. Pinterest doesn't let you edit a Pin's image or video once it's published.
- If it's the targeting or description, edit them. The ad goes back into review, which can take up to another 24 hours.
- If you believe the ad follows the rules, email Pinterest with the disapproval reason you received and the URLs of your ads.
- The ad review page doesn't print a separate appeal address; it has a Contact us link at the bottom
- Pinterest has announced updated advertising guidelines from 12 November 2026, with a preview on its policy site. Check it before planning campaigns that run past that date

What else can stop an approved ad from running?
If your ad was approved but still isn't delivering, check these before assuming it's a policy issue:
- A failed payment can pause campaigns until Pinterest processes a payment (see our billing guide)
- Removing your payment method suspends active campaigns
- Prepaid campaigns pause automatically once the prepaid amount is used up
- Ads aren't available in every region; Pinterest's help pages show a notice if you're viewing from one where they aren't
