What do you need before you add a catalogue?

A catalogue (Pinterest calls it Catalogs) uploads many products at once as product Pins, showing title, description, price and availability. You can then promote them as shopping ads. Catalogues aren't available in every region. Before you start, you need:

  1. A Pinterest business account.
  2. A claimed website. You must own the domain and be able to edit its code, so most marketplace shops on Etsy, eBay or Amazon can't be claimed.
  3. The Pinterest tag installed on your site.
  4. A site that meets Pinterest's merchant guidelines, with easy-to-find contact details, a shipping policy and a refund policy.
  • Pinterest processes up to 20 million products per catalogue
  • If you can't meet these requirements, Pinterest's alternatives are product Rich Pins, individual ads from your profile, an e-commerce partner, or its API

Which fields does your product feed need?

Your feed (Pinterest calls it a data source) can be a TSV, CSV, XML (RSS 2.0 or ATOM 1.0) or Google Sheets file, encoded as UTF-8. If any required field is missing or formatted wrongly, the whole catalogue fails ingestion.

  • Optional fields such as product_type, sale_price, brand, color, size and additional_image_link help Pinterest show products to the right people
  • Compressed files are accepted, but not encrypted or password-protected ones, or Dropbox files

How do you add a hosted data source?

A hosted feed is best if your shop platform can publish a feed URL, because Pinterest fetches it every 24 hours and keeps prices and stock current.

  1. Log in to your business account on a computer and click the menu icon at the top left.
  2. Under Manage business, click Catalogs and product groups, then Add data source.
  3. Click the Provide URL link tab.
  4. Enter a name, the feed URL, file format, country or region, language, default currency and default availability. Add a login only if your feed needs one.
  5. Optional: switch on Scheduled ingestions to pick the time Pinterest fetches the feed.
  6. Click Test your data source, paste a sample including the header row, and click Validate data source. Fix any errors it lists.
  7. Click Create Pins. Pinterest emails you about the status.
  • Country and language can't be changed later. Choose the country where you sell, because it decides where your Pins are shown
  • The first data source on an account must be added by the account owner. After it's approved you can add up to 50

How do you upload a feed manually?

Manual upload suits a small shop exporting a spreadsheet. The steps start the same way:

  1. Open Catalogs and product groups and click Add data source.
  2. Click the Upload manually tab.
  3. Enter a name, country or region, language and default currency.
  4. Click Choose a file, or drag your file into the box.
  5. Test and validate the data source, then click Upload.
  • Update a manual feed at least every 30 days, or your products stop being shown organically. After 90 days without an update, they stop appearing in ads too
  • Within those 30 days you can use Manage ingestion, then Trigger ingestion, to refresh an unchanged file; after that, upload a new one
  • Update the original data source each time rather than creating a new one

What happens after approval, and why do feeds fail?

Once a data source is approved, your products are on Pinterest as product Pins. Pinterest creates some product groups for you each day, including All Products, Top Sellers, Back In Stock, Best Deals, New Arrivals and Most Popular, and you can build your own with filters to promote as shopping ads. Products marked out of stock aren't shown organically or in ads.

If the data source isn't approved, the catalogs diagnostics page explains why. The most common causes:

  • A required field is missing or misformatted, which fails the whole catalogue
  • The hosted URL needs extra clicks, IP or SSH key whitelisting, or uses a port other than 80 or 443
  • You changed a product image but kept the same image URL; Pinterest only picks up a new image from a new URL
  • Item IDs repeat across two data sources
  • The site doesn't meet the merchant guidelines, for example no clear refund policy
  • Once approved, you may also qualify for the Verified Merchant Program and its blue checkmark, which has its own requirements for account age, website age, catalogue ingestion and tag events

Common questions

How many products can I upload to Pinterest?

Up to 20 million products per catalogue. If a feed has more, Pinterest processes the first 20 million rows.

How often does Pinterest update my catalogue?

A hosted feed is fetched once every 24 hours, and you can schedule the time. On-demand ingestion isn't supported for hosted feeds. Manual feeds update when you upload or trigger an ingestion.

Do I have to run ads to use a catalogue?

No. Catalogue products are shown organically as product Pins, as long as they're in stock and the feed is kept up to date. Ads are optional.

Can I use Shopify with Pinterest catalogues?

Pinterest says Shopify businesses can link their Shopify account to create product groups from collections.

What is the Pinterest Verified Merchant Program?

Verified merchants get a blue checkmark on their profile and Pins. To qualify you need an approved catalogue plus, among other things, a business account at least three months old, a claimed website at least nine months old, and Pinterest tag events sent every 7 days.
