What are the rules for a custom LinkedIn URL?
LinkedIn's help page sets these limits:
- LinkedIn suggests a version of your name or professional brand, since you'll share it and some job applications ask for it.
- Profiles in a second language share the same URL with a language code, such as fr, added at the end.
| Rule | What LinkedIn says |
|---|---|
| Length | 3 to 100 characters |
| Not allowed | Spaces, symbols, special characters or the word LinkedIn |
| Capital letters | Ignored: JohnSmith and johnsmith go to the same profile |
| Availability | First come, first served; LinkedIn can't release a taken URL on request |
| How often | Up to five changes in six months, then no more changes for six months |
| Your old URL | Stays linked to you for six months unless you unlink it |
| An unlinked URL | Hidden from others for seven days, then anyone can claim it |
| Closed accounts | The URL becomes available 180 days after the account closes |

How do you control what your public profile shows?
Your public profile is the version people see when they aren't signed in to LinkedIn, and the one search engines can show. To change it on desktop:
- Click the Me icon, then View Profile.
- Click the Edit icon next to Public profile & URL.
- To hide your whole profile from public view, switch Your profile's public visibility to Off.
- To hide individual sections, switch each one Off. Changes save automatically.
- In the app: tap your profile photo, then Settings, then Visibility, then Edit your public profile.
- Not every profile section can be shown publicly, and visitors may still be asked to sign in to see parts of it.
- Turning your public profile off can make it harder to recover your account if you lose your primary email, because LinkedIn may ask for your public profile URL.

Why does Google still show my old LinkedIn details?
Common problems after a change:
| Problem | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Search results show old details | Search engines refresh on their own schedule, which can take weeks or months | Ask the search engine to refresh, for example with Google's outdated content tool |
| The URL you want is taken | Custom URLs are first come, first served | Choose a variation |
| Can't change the URL again | You've made five changes in six months | Wait until the six months are up |
| Old link shows Profile Not Found | That URL was unlinked or claimed | Share your current URL |
| Can't switch back to the old URL | This should normally work straight away | Contact LinkedIn |
| New profile missing from search engines | Little activity, or public visibility is off | Complete your profile, connect with people and check public visibility |
