What is engagement rate?
Engagement rate is the share of people who interacted with a post (likes, comments, shares, saves or clicks), usually calculated as total engagements divided by reach or by followers, times 100.
Why it matters
It shows whether people care about what you post, which raw follower counts don't. Because tools divide by different numbers (reach, impressions or followers), compare rates only when they're calculated the same way.
Example
A post reached 2,000 people and got 80 likes, 12 comments and 8 shares: 100 engagements ÷ 2,000 reach × 100 = a 5% engagement rate by reach.
