X Communities: how to join, post and run one

X Communities are topic groups run by their members' admins and moderators. Join from a Community's page with Join or Ask to join, then pick the Community as your audience when you post. Anyone on X can see Community posts, but only members can take part fully. Creating a Community needs X Premium, and admins must meet X's eligibility rules.

What are X Communities?

X describes Communities as dedicated places for people to connect around the topics they care about most. Each one is started and managed by people on X: admins and moderators who set and enforce the Community's rules. People who join become members.

Community rules sit on top of the X Rules, not instead of them. A Community must have at least one rule and can have up to ten.

How do you join or find a Community on X?

You need a public account; X says it's working on access for protected accounts. How you join depends on the membership type the admin chose: Open (select Join on the Community's page, below its name, read the rules and select Agree and join), Ask to join plus member invites (a moderator approves your request, and people moderators invite are approved automatically), or Ask to join only (requests, but members can't invite others).

Finding Communities is the harder part. X's help centre says you currently join through an invite or a shared link to the Community page. Once you're a member of at least one Community, you get a Communities tab (in the iOS app, or the sidebar on x.com), and from there you can search:

  1. Open the Communities tab.
  2. Select the magnifying glass at the top.
  3. Search by Community name, description, or the creator's name or handle.
  • X says Community search is available on the web and iOS, and that not every Community appears in results.

How do you post in a Community?

Community posts appear on the Community page and in members' Home timelines. X also says they appear in global search, on your profile and in other timelines, much like regular posts, and they stay up even if the Community is deleted.

  1. Start a new post.
  2. Choose your audience: Everyone sends it to your followers; choosing a Community sends it there. If you're in several, they're listed under My Communities.
  3. Write the post and select Post.

Who can see and reply to Community posts?

  • Anyone on X can see a Community's timeline, posts, and its list of members and moderators if they have the link.
  • Non-members can reply to Community posts, but moderators can restrict non-member engagement or hide their replies.
  • Community posts don't show view counts, according to X's View counts help page.
  • Members can report a post for breaking the Community's rules (it goes to the moderators) or for breaking the X Rules (it goes to X).
  • If an account blocks a moderator, or a moderator blocks it, that account can't join. If it's already a member, X removes it and sends a notification.

How do you leave a Community?

Open the Community's page, select the Joined button at the top, then choose Leave the community. Anything you posted while you were a member, replies included, stays in the Community. If you change your mind later, X says you can rejoin with the original invite. Moderators can also remove members who break the Community's rules, and must explain which rule was broken.

How do you create and run a Community?

X's Premium help page lists creating a Community as a feature for Premium subscribers. The admin, who owns the Community, also has to meet X's eligibility rules:

  • The account must be public. Switching to protected removes moderator privileges.
  • The account must be at least six months old.
  • It must have a verified email address or phone number.
  • It must not violate, or have a history of violating, X's Terms of Service.
RoleWhat they do
AdminOwns the Community; sets name, rules, cover photo, description and Open or Restricted membership; adds and removes moderators
ModeratorInvites and removes members, reviews reported posts (Hide post or Keep), keeps conversation on track
MemberPosts into the Community, replies, invites others where allowed, reports posts

Should a small business start or join a Community?

Joining is low-risk: find Communities where your customers or your trade already talk, follow the rules, and answer questions properly rather than posting promotions. Starting one is a bigger commitment. X expects most moderators to be active every day and lists sending mass invitations to people who may not be interested, and abusing moderator tools, among the don'ts. A Community works best when there's a real shared interest, such as a hobby your product serves or a local area, and someone on your team who enjoys the conversation.

Where does Zolyp fit? (Disclosure: Zolyp is our product)

Community conversation needs a person. What Zolyp takes off your plate is the rest of your X presence: it plans, writes and schedules the posts for your own X account, in your brand voice, which leaves you time for the replies and discussions that build a Community.

Common questions

Do you need X Premium to create a Community?

Yes. X's About X Premium page lists creating a Community as a feature for Premium subscribers. Joining and posting in Communities is free.

Are X Community posts public?

Yes. X says Community posts can be seen by anyone on X and can appear in search, on your profile and in other timelines. Only members can take part fully, and moderators can restrict replies from non-members.

Can I join an X Community with a protected account?

Not at the moment. X's help centre says you need a public account to join, and that it's working on access for protected accounts.

What happens to my posts if a Community is deleted or suspended?

X says your posts aren't deleted if a Community is deleted. If a Community is suspended, posts you made there become visible only to you; you can delete them, or download your X archive to keep a copy.

How many rules can an X Community have?

At least one and up to ten at a time, according to X's help centre. Admins can add, edit and remove them.
