What do limited replies look like to other people?

  • Everyone can see that you've limited who can reply
  • People you've invited to reply see a line under the post in their Home timeline saying they can reply, and get a mention notification if that setting is on
  • The limit only affects replies. People can still like, repost or vote in a poll
  • Replies and reposts inherit the limit; quote posts don't
  • If you delete the post, its reposts are deleted and replies lose the limit
  • If you deactivate your account, reply limits lift, and they come back if you reactivate within the reactivation window

When should a business limit replies?

Our view, not X's: rarely, and not by default. Replies are where customers ask questions and where other people see you answer them, and X says whether the original author has replied is one of the factors it considers when ranking replies. Limiting replies makes sense when:

  • A post is attracting spam or abuse and you want the conversation to stay useful
  • You're running a structured Q&A with guests you mention, and want the thread to stay on their answers
  • You're posting a statement where a public back-and-forth won't help, such as a service outage notice that directs people to a support channel

Why can people still respond to your post?

  • They're quoting it. Quote posts don't inherit your reply limits
  • They're people you mentioned. Mentioned accounts can always reply under the follow and verified settings
  • Your account was deactivated for a while, so limits were lifted and replies could be added in that window
  • You want to stop a specific person. Blocking or muting is the tool for that, not reply settings

Not entirely. The tightest setting is Only accounts you mention: if you mention no one, no one else can reply, though people can still quote the post.

Can I change who can reply after posting on X?

Yes. Open the post's More menu, select Change who can reply and choose a new setting.

Can people still repost a post with limited replies?

Yes. X says the limit only affects replies. People can still like, repost and vote in polls.

Do quote posts follow my reply settings?

No. Replies and reposts inherit the limit you set on the original post, but quote posts don't.
