What does the blue checkmark mean now?

It means the account has an active X Premium subscription and meets X's eligibility rules. It doesn't mean the account has been ID verified. X began winding down its old verification programme (for active, notable and authentic accounts) on 1 April 2023 and no longer accepts applications under those criteria.

In the EEA, X now calls blue checkmark users Premium users rather than verified, after a European Commission decision of 5 December 2025 found the checkmark misleading under the Digital Services Act. X says it's appealing.

Which plans include the blue checkmark?

X's Premium page lists localised web pricing starting at $3 a month or $32 a year, plus tax, in available countries; check the price of a tier with the checkmark on x.com before you subscribe. X says Premium is now part of The X Subscription, which bundles X benefits with other products. Existing subscribers keep their plan until they switch, and only personal X accounts can be connected to The X Subscription.

What are X's eligibility rules?

X says it doesn't endorse the views of accounts with checkmarks, and can remove a checkmark at any time without notice.

  • Complete: a display name and a profile photo
  • Active: the account must have been used in the past 30 days
  • Secure: a confirmed phone number
  • Not deceptive: no recent changes to your profile photo, display name or username, and no signs of being misleading or deceptive
  • No platform manipulation or spam

What is ID verification on X?

  • An optional extra for Premium subscribers: you verify your identity with a government-issued ID and get an ID verified label in the pop-up that opens from your checkmark
  • It's currently only for individuals, not businesses or organisations
  • X lists prioritised support as a benefit
  • ID verification is required for creators who receive money through Ad Revenue Sharing or Creator Subscriptions
  • X uses third-party processors, Persona and Stripe, for the checks

Why don't you have a checkmark?

  • You changed your profile photo, display name or username. The checkmark goes until X reviews the account again, and you can't make more changes meanwhile
  • You're on the Basic tier, which doesn't include the checkmark
  • The review hasn't finished, or the account didn't meet a rule: no profile photo, no confirmed phone number, or no activity in the last 30 days
  • Your subscription ended, or X removed the checkmark for breaking its rules. X says it may do this without a refund
