Should a business use a personal channel or a Brand Account?
YouTube offers two kinds of channel. For a business, the Brand Account route is usually the right one, because the channel isn't tied to one person's name:
| Personal channel | Brand Account channel | |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Your Google Account name | Any name, such as your business name |
| Who manages it | Only you | More than one owner or manager |
| Best for | A sole trader who is the brand | A business, shop or team |

How do you create a YouTube channel with your business name?
You need a Google Account first. Use one the business controls, not a staff member's personal email, so the channel doesn't leave when they do.
YouTube notes that if you use a supervised experience, you may not be able to create a channel, so use an ordinary adult Google Account for the business.
- Sign in to YouTube on a computer or the mobile site.
- Go to your channel list.
- Click Create a new channel. (If you pick an existing Brand Account that already has a channel, YouTube switches you to that channel instead.)
- Choose a profile picture, enter your business name and pick a handle.
- Click Create channel. This creates a new Brand Account.

How do you set up the channel profile?
The profile is what people see before they watch anything, and it's where a potential customer checks that you're a real, local, active business. In YouTube Studio, open Customisation, then Profile:
- Check the channel name and handle. Each can only be changed twice in 14 days, so settle on them early. Changing the name also removes a verification badge.
- Write a description that says who you serve, what the videos help with and where you are, if you're local. It shows in the channel header.
- Add links (up to 14). Put your website first: the first link is shown near the Subscribe button.
- Add a contact email for enquiries.
- Click Publish after each change.

How do you add your team without sharing a password?
Use channel permissions. Each person signs in with their own Google Account and gets a role, so you can remove one person without changing anything for the others. If the channel is on a Brand Account, YouTube asks you to switch to channel permissions to add or remove access.
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and click Settings on the left.
- Click Permissions, then Invite.
- Enter the person's email address.
- Choose a role under Access, such as Manager, Editor or Viewer.
- Click Done. The invite expires after 30 days if it isn't accepted.

Which features need verification?
Some YouTube features unlock in stages. A new channel can upload videos and Shorts, create playlists and use the Posts tab straight away, as long as it has no active Community Guidelines strikes.
| Level | How to get it | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Create a channel | Uploads, Shorts, playlists, Posts tab |
| Intermediate | Verify a phone number | Custom thumbnails, videos over 15 minutes, live streaming from a computer |
| Advanced | Channel history, or verify with ID or a video | Chapters, pinned comments, clickable links in descriptions, A/B testing, applying for monetisation |

What should a new business channel post first?
Start with the questions customers already ask you. Each answer is a video people are searching for, and it shows what you know. A simple start:
- List ten questions you answer every week by phone, email or in person.
- Film one short answer per question. Good light and clear sound matter more than an expensive camera.
- Give each video a title that matches how a customer would phrase the question.
- Group related videos into a playlist, so one answer leads to the next.
- Pick an upload day you can keep, and cut a Short from each longer video.
How do you keep a business channel safe as staff change?
A channel often outlives the person who set it up. A few habits keep it in the business's hands:
- Create the channel from a Google Account the business owns, such as a shared admin address, not a personal one.
- Give staff and agencies their own access through Settings, then Permissions, rather than the account password.
- Use the narrowest role that works: Editor for someone who uploads, Viewer for someone who only reads reports.
- Remove people from Permissions on the day they leave or a contract ends.
- Review the Permissions list every few months.

Where Zolyp fits
A channel only grows if videos keep arriving. Zolyp, which publishes this guide, publishes to YouTube as one of 9 platforms (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads). It creates video uploads and Shorts with titles and descriptions written for search, can set a custom thumbnail on a standard video, and schedules them with the posts on your other networks. You approve the week before anything goes live.
Common questions
Can I make a YouTube channel under my business name?
Yes. Create a new channel from your channel list and enter your business name. YouTube sets it up as a Brand Account channel.
What's the difference between a personal channel and a Brand Account?
Only you can manage a personal channel, and it uses your Google Account name. A Brand Account channel can have its own name and more than one owner or manager.
How often can I change my channel name or handle?
Each can be changed twice within a 14-day period, so choose carefully at the start.
How do I unlock custom thumbnails on a new channel?
Verify the channel with a phone number at youtube.com/verify. Custom thumbnails are an intermediate feature.
Should a business channel use my personal Google Account?
It's safer not to. Create the channel from an account the business controls, then give people access with channel permissions, so it stays with the business if anyone leaves.
