How does YouTube search rank videos?
YouTube's help page on search names three elements, and their weight can shift with the type of search. You control the first directly, and earn the other two by making videos people are glad they watched:
- Relevance: how well the title, tags, description and video content match the search.
- Engagement: signals such as watch time that show whether other viewers found the video relevant to that search.
- Quality: signals that a channel shows expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness on the topic.

Why do two people see different search results?
Results can also reflect each viewer's own search and watch history, if they have it turned on. That's why your own search isn't a reliable test of where you rank: you have watched your own videos more than anyone. YouTube also says it doesn't accept payment for better placement in organic search results, and that it doesn't favour Google's own content over other creators'.

How should you write a YouTube title?
Titles can be up to 100 characters, but YouTube's own tips favour short ones. Its advice:
- Be accurate. A title that doesn't match the video makes viewers leave.
- Be succinct. Viewers may only see part of the title, so put the key words first.
- Save episode numbers and branding for the end.
- Limit capitals and emoji to moments that need emphasis.
- Example: a bakery's video titled Our Saturday Special Episode 12 says nothing to a searcher. How to keep sourdough fresh for 3 days | Hill Street Bakery puts the search words first and the brand last, and still fits comfortably on a phone screen.

What makes a good YouTube description?
Descriptions can be up to 5,000 characters, but the first lines do most of the work, because they show before viewers expand the description. YouTube's description tips:
- Use the first few lines to describe the video, because that's what viewers see first.
- Pick one or two main words that describe the video and use them in both the title and the description.
- Write a unique description for each video; it makes the video easier to find through search.
- Link to playlists of related videos.
- Add chapters to longer videos so viewers can skip to the part they need.
- Check how the description looks in search, on the watch page and on phones.

Do tags and hashtags still matter?
Tags matter less than most people think. YouTube says the title, thumbnail and description are more important for discovery, and that tags play a minimal role. They help mainly when the topic is often misspelled. Putting long lists of tags into a description breaks YouTube's spam and deceptive practices policies.
Hashtags are different: they appear on the video. Of the hashtags in a description, up to three that YouTube considers most engaging show by the title. Hashtags can't contain spaces, and if a video has more than 60, YouTube ignores all of them. Off-topic or misleading hashtags break YouTube's rules too, so keep them to what the video is genuinely about.

How do thumbnails and chapters help discovery?
The thumbnail is part of what YouTube calls the most important metadata, alongside the title and description. Keep the design simple and upload the largest image you can, since it shows at very different sizes across devices. Custom thumbnails need a verified channel.
Chapters split a longer video into named sections, each with its own preview, and you add them as timestamps in the description. They make a long video easier to use, which is the engagement YouTube's ranking looks for.

How do you find the words people search for?
Start with your customers' own phrasing: the questions in your inbox are search terms. Then use YouTube Analytics. Its Trends tab shows what your audience and viewers across YouTube are searching for, which helps you spot gaps no video has filled yet.
Imagine what someone would type to find your video, and make sure those words are in the title and the first lines of the description. Then check the result after a few weeks: if impressions are low, the topic or wording may not match what people search; if impressions are high but few people click, the title and thumbnail need work.

Common questions
Do YouTube tags help SEO?
A little. YouTube says tags play a minimal role in discovery and mainly help with commonly misspelled topics. Titles, thumbnails and descriptions matter more.
Can you pay YouTube to rank higher in search?
No. YouTube says it doesn't accept payment for better placement in organic search results.
How long can a YouTube title and description be?
Titles can be up to 100 characters and descriptions up to 5,000. Keep titles short, because viewers may only see the start.
How many hashtags should a YouTube video have?
A few relevant ones. Up to three show by the title, and with more than 60 YouTube ignores every hashtag on the video.
Does the video itself affect YouTube search?
Yes. YouTube says relevance includes how well the video content matches the search, alongside the title, tags and description, and engagement signals such as watch time show whether viewers found it useful.
