Are video Pins worth it for a small business?
Video isn't required on Pinterest, but it helps. Pinterest's business blog suggests telling stories in different formats, such as video, carousels and collages, rather than relying on one. For many small businesses, video Pins are also cheap to make: you're probably already filming short clips for Instagram, TikTok or YouTube Shorts.
The difference on Pinterest is purpose. Videos that do well here are usually useful or inspiring rather than trend-led: people are planning, so they want to see how to do something or what the result looks like.
You don't need special equipment. A phone, daylight and a steady surface cover most how-to and product videos. Film vertically from the start so you don't have to crop later.
Start small. Two or three video Pins a month alongside your image Pins is enough to learn whether video works for your audience, and the analytics will show which videos hold attention.

What are the video Pin specs?
These come from Pinterest's Pin specs page for organic Pins. Ad specs are different, so check the ad specs page if you plan to promote a video.
- Pinterest Create's fundamentals page also recommends a resolution of 720p or higher.
- Pinterest's creative best-practices page gives a 500-character description limit, so writing under 500 keeps you safe on both.
| Spec | What Pinterest says |
|---|---|
| File type | MP4 or M4V on web; MP4, MOV or M4V on Android and iOS |
| Encoding | H.264 or H.265 |
| Length | At least 4 seconds, up to 5 minutes |
| Aspect ratio | 9:16 (1080 x 1920 pixels) recommended; 1:2, 2:3, 3:4, 4:5 and 1:1 also accepted |

How long should a video Pin be, and how should it start?
Pinterest Create's guide to creating Pins suggests an ideal length of 45 to 90 seconds, says to make sure your first 10 seconds count by opening with a takeaway or useful tip rather than a long intro, and recommends text overlay instead of title cards.
In practice: show the finished result or the key tip first, then explain how. If the whole idea fits in 20 seconds, don't stretch it; the length suggestion is a guide, not a target.
A simple structure for a 45 to 90 second video: the result in the first seconds, three to five short steps, then the finished result again with a short line telling people where to find more. That last line matters on Pinterest, because the link is how a view becomes a visit.

What video Pins should a business make?
These are our suggestions for formats that suit Pinterest's planning mindset. Each should link to a page with more detail.
Match the video type to your goal. If you want saves, lean on how-tos, recipes and checklists. If you want clicks, show products in use and end with a reason to visit the page, such as the full list, the pattern or the price.
| Video type | Example | Link it to |
|---|---|---|
| Quick how-to | How to style a small shelf in three steps | Blog post or product page |
| Before and after | A garden or room transformation, with permission | Project page |
| Product in use | A bag packed for a weekend away | Product page |
| Recipe or project | A 60-second bake or craft | Recipe or project page |
| Three ways to | Three ways to wear one scarf | Product or collection page |
| Process | How a piece is made, sped up | About or product page |
| Checklist walk-through | What to pack for a newborn photoshoot | Guide page |
| Seasonal idea | A five-minute autumn table setting | Seasonal guide or collection |
How do you write titles, descriptions and covers for video Pins?
Video Pins are found through search just like image Pins, so the words matter as much as the footage. Pinterest Create says to add a title and description with relevant keywords and lets you add up to 10 topic tags per Pin. Pinterest's creative page notes that the first 40 characters of a title are the most likely to show.
Assume some viewers will watch without sound, so let the on-screen text carry the key steps on its own.
- Start the title with the search phrase: 'small balcony garden ideas' before any branding.
- Write a description that says what the video shows and who it's for, in full sentences.
- Choose a cover frame that shows the result clearly, not a blurred transition.
- Add a short text overlay early in the video that matches the title.
- Add topic tags and link the Pin to the matching page.

Can you reuse Reels, TikToks or Shorts as video Pins?
Often, yes, since they're already vertical. A few changes make them work better on Pinterest:
Repurposing works best when the original video was useful rather than trend-led. A reaction to a trending sound rarely suits Pinterest; a tutorial filmed for Reels usually does.
- Export the original file, so it has no other platform's watermark or interface on it.
- Check that captions and text sit inside Pinterest's safe zones.
- Replace trend audio and in-jokes with a clear spoken or on-screen explanation; Pinterest viewers are planning, not following trends.
- Rewrite the title and description for search, and add a link.
- Pick a cover frame that shows the finished result, since the first frame of a Reel is often a face or a blank start.
- Upload it once. Pinterest's help centre advises against uploading content that already exists on Pinterest.

Which video metrics should you watch?
Pinterest Analytics only shows video metrics when you filter to video Pins. Its definitions are below. For a business, the most useful pairing is usually 10-second plays (did the opening hold attention?) and outbound clicks (did the video send people to your site?).
Give each video a fair run before judging it. Pins can keep gaining views long after they're published, so compare videos after a similar number of weeks live rather than on their first few days.
Compare your videos with each other, not with an outside benchmark. If one video keeps far more viewers past 10 seconds, look at how it opens and use that kind of opening in your next few videos.
| Metric | Pinterest's definition |
|---|---|
| Video views | Views of at least 2 seconds with 50% of the video in view |
| 10-second plays | Times a video was viewed for 10 seconds or more |
| Played to 95% | Times a video was viewed to 95% of its length |
| Average video play time | Average time people spent playing the video and static image cards in your Pin |
| Outbound clicks | Actions that lead people to a destination off Pinterest |

Common questions
How long should a Pinterest video be?
Pinterest's specs allow 4 seconds to 5 minutes. Pinterest Create suggests 45 to 90 seconds as an ideal length, with the first 10 seconds doing the most work.
What size should a video Pin be?
Pinterest recommends vertical 9:16 video at 1080 by 1920 pixels for full-bleed video, and at least 720p resolution.
Do video Pins need sound?
Make sure the video still makes sense without it. Use text overlay to explain each step, as Pinterest Create suggests, and treat voiceover as a bonus.
Can video Pins link to my website?
Yes. Add a destination link when you create the Pin, and point it at the page the video is about.
Should I post the same video on Pinterest and Instagram?
You can, if you export a clean file and rewrite the title and description for search. Upload it to Pinterest once rather than saving it repeatedly.
Do video Pins get more reach than image Pins?
Pinterest doesn't state a rule that video gets more reach. Its advice is to mix formats such as video, carousels and collages. Test both and compare saves and outbound clicks in your own analytics.
