What can one YouTube video become?
A long video already contains the research, the explanation and the footage. Repurposing means reshaping that work for other places, not posting the same file everywhere. Here is what a single ten-minute how-to video can usually produce.
| Piece | Where it goes | How to make it |
|---|---|---|
| Shorts | YouTube Shorts | Cut stand-alone moments with YouTube's own tools |
| Vertical clips | Instagram Reels, TikTok, Facebook | Export the same moments from your editor with captions burned in |
| Carousel | Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook | One slide per step from the video, plus a cover and a closing slide |
| Text post | LinkedIn, Facebook, X, Threads | The main point and one example, written as a short post with a link |
| YouTube post | Your channel's Posts tab | A poll or question that leads into the video |
| Email or blog | Your list and your website | A short summary with the video embedded |
How do you film with clips in mind?
Repurposing is much easier when you plan for it before you press record. A few habits during filming save hours in editing.
- Make each section stand alone: restate the question at the start of each part, so a 40-second cut makes sense without the rest.
- Keep important action near the centre of the frame, so a vertical crop of a horizontal video doesn't cut it off.
- Film a few vertical extras on a second phone or after the main take: the result, the reveal, a close-up.
- Say numbers and key points out loud as well as showing them, so clips work with captions.
- Note timestamps of good moments while you film, or straight after, so you can find them later.
- Plan the clips on paper first: under the video's outline, write the three to five moments you expect to become Shorts, and make sure each one has a clear opening line.
Way 1: Edit into a Short in the YouTube app
The quickest route is the YouTube app. It works on long-form public videos you uploaded; private and unlisted videos, and videos with third-party copyright claims, can't be used. Shorts made this way are linked back to the original video.
- Go to the watch page of your video in the YouTube app.
- Tap Remix, then Edit into a Short.
- Select up to 60 seconds of the video. If your selection is shorter, you can record extra footage with the Shorts camera.
- Tap Next to add text or filters, then upload.
- If you don't see the option, open the video in YouTube Studio, click Show more, tick Allow people to sample this content under Shorts remixing, and save.

Way 2: Clips and Shorts in YouTube Studio
On a computer, YouTube Studio's Clips and Shorts tool lets you pick segments by selecting words in the transcript, which is faster than scrubbing through a timeline. YouTube says using your own content in a clip or Short won't get you penalised.
- In YouTube Studio, go to Content, then Videos, and click the video.
- Select Clips and Shorts in the left menu, click Create clip or Short, and choose Short.
- Pick the segment by selecting transcript text and clicking Confirm selection, or by entering timestamps in the timeline editor.
- Adjust the start and end points if needed, then click Preview Short. Automatic captions are added where available, and you can edit or turn them off.
- Click Create draft and finish the usual upload details.
- AI-suggested segments are only offered to creators in some countries (including the UK, US, Canada and India) and in some languages.
- The source video is added as the Short's related video automatically, unless the Short is private, unlisted or made for kids.
- Your finished Shorts appear under Content, then Shorts, and on the source video's Clips and Shorts tab.

Way 3: export clips for other platforms
Shorts made in YouTube's tools live on YouTube. For Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and LinkedIn, export the clips from your own editing app or from your original footage instead. Each platform sets its own length and size rules, and they change, so check our video requirements page or the platform's help centre before you export.
Two YouTube rules matter when you bring vertical clips back the other way. A square or vertical upload of up to three minutes counts as a Short. And a Short over one minute with an active copyright claim is blocked, so keep licensed music out of longer clips.
- Export from your original files, not a downloaded copy, to keep quality.
- Burn captions into clips for apps where many people watch without sound.
- Change the opening line for each platform rather than reusing the YouTube intro.
- Avoid another app's watermark on clips you post elsewhere.

How do you turn video into posts that aren't video?
Some of your audience won't watch video at all, and some platforms reward other formats. The script and the steps are already written, so the effort is mostly in rewriting for the reader.
- Carousel: one step per slide, using a still frame from the video as the background.
- Text post: lead with the most surprising point, add one example from the video, and finish with the link.
- Quote card: a strong line you said on camera, with your name and business.
- YouTube post: ask a question the video answers, such as a poll on "How long do you think a roof replacement takes?", then share the video.
- Email: three sentences on the problem, the video embedded or linked, and one call to action.
- Website: embed the video on the page that covers the same topic.
| Platform | Adapt it like this |
|---|---|
| Lead with the business lesson; write in first person; link the video at the end | |
| Visual first: carousel or vertical clip; keep the caption short with a clear next step | |
| Conversational; ask a question that invites replies; good for local audiences | |
| X and Threads | One sharp point per post; a short thread can follow the video's steps |
Worked example: one accountant's video, two weeks of posts
Hypothetical example. A sole-trader accountant publishes a 12-minute video, "Five expenses sole traders forget to claim". Using the methods above, it becomes two weeks of content without filming anything new.
| Day | Platform | Piece |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1, Mon | YouTube | The full video |
| Week 1, Tue | YouTube Shorts | Short 1: expense one, linked to the full video |
| Week 1, Wed | Text post: the five expenses as a list, with the video link | |
| Week 1, Thu | Carousel: one expense per slide | |
| Week 1, Fri | YouTube Shorts | Short 2: expense two |
| Week 2, Mon | YouTube | Post: poll asking which expense people forget most |
| Week 2, Tue | Instagram and Facebook | Vertical clip of expense three with captions |
| Week 2, Wed | Short summary with the video embedded | |
| Week 2, Thu | YouTube Shorts | Short 3: expense four |
Where Zolyp fits
A note on our own product: Zolyp is an AI social media team for small businesses. It plans your calendar across platforms including YouTube, writes the post text, schedules and publishes once you approve, and sends a plain-language weekly report on what worked.
Rewriting one idea for each platform and slotting it into the calendar is exactly the work Zolyp takes on, so your filmed video goes further.
Common questions
How do I turn a YouTube video into a Short?
In the YouTube app, open your video, tap Remix, then Edit into a Short, and select up to 60 seconds. On a computer, use Clips and Shorts in YouTube Studio. Both link the Short back to the original.
Why can't I see Edit into a Short on my video?
It only works on public long-form videos you uploaded without third-party copyright claims. Also check that Allow people to sample this content is ticked under Shorts remixing in YouTube Studio.
Will YouTube penalise me for making clips of my own videos?
No. YouTube says using your own content in a clip or Short won't get you penalised.
Can I post the same clip to TikTok and Instagram?
Yes, but export it from your own editor without another app's watermark, check each platform's length and size rules, and rewrite the caption for each one.
Should I post the full video on other platforms too?
Usually not. Shorter clips and posts written for each platform tend to suit those audiences better, with a link to the full video on YouTube for anyone who wants the whole answer.
How many Shorts can I get from one long video?
It depends on how many stand-alone moments it has. A how-to video with clear steps often gives one Short per step; plan for this when you film.
