What are Instagram stories good for?
Stories expire after 24 hours, though you can see their insights for up to two years. Stories you add to a highlight stay on your profile until you remove them, even after the original has disappeared. That combination makes stories ideal for two jobs: low-effort daily updates for people who already follow you, and a library of evergreen answers in your highlights.
Stickers are what make stories interactive. Instagram's list includes Add yours, Countdown, Link, Location, Mention, Music, Poll and emoji slider, Questions and Quiz, among others. Not every sticker is available to everyone, so check your app is up to date if one is missing.
A sustainable habit is a few frames on most days rather than a long burst once a week. Film as things happen, add one sticker where it fits and move on. If you're short of time, a single photo with a question sticker is enough to keep followers in touch.
Plan your highlights at the same time as your stories. Decide on four to six highlight names, such as Prices, How to order, Reviews, FAQs and Location, and add to them whenever a story answers one of those questions.

Everyday and behind-the-scenes ideas (1 to 7)
These take seconds to film and show followers that you're open, busy and real. Keep them unpolished: a steady phone and good light matter more than editing.
- 1. Good morning from the shop, studio or van, with today's hours.
- 2. What's on the bench today: the job, order or bake in progress.
- 3. A quick tour of a new display, room or menu.
- 4. The delivery that just arrived.
- 5. A team member's lunch break pick or playlist.
- 6. End-of-day tidy-up and a thank-you to today's customers.
- 7. The view from today's job, with the Location sticker.
Interactive ideas using stickers (8 to 14)
Every reply and sticker answer is a small conversation. Replies arrive in your messages, so reply back; that's often where enquiries start.
Share the results of polls and quizzes the next day. People who voted come back to see the outcome, and it shows you listen. If a Questions sticker gets the same question several times, that's a sign it belongs in a highlight or a reel.
- 8. Poll: which of two new products should we stock?
- 9. Emoji slider: how much do you love this before-and-after?
- 10. Quiz: a myth-or-fact question from your trade.
- 11. Questions sticker: ask us anything about [topic] this week.
- 12. Add yours: share your photo with something you bought from us.
- 13. Countdown: days until a launch, event or seasonal menu.
- 14. Poll results: share what people chose and what you'll do about it.

Ideas that sell without shouting (15 to 21)
Stories are a good place to sell because the people watching already follow you. Keep each selling story to one product or offer, show it clearly and give one way to act, such as a link, a reply or a visit.
- 15. Last few left: low stock or remaining slots, with a Link sticker to buy or book.
- 16. Product in hand: a 10-second close-up with the price on screen.
- 17. How to order: three frames, saved to a highlight.
- 18. Customer's order being packed, with their permission to share.
- 19. This week's special or offer, with the end date.
- 20. New arrival unboxed, with a poll: would you wear, use or try it?
- 21. Reshare your latest reel or post to stories with a one-line reason to watch.
Ideas that build trust (22 to 28)
Trust stories show the people and standards behind the business. Ask permission before showing customers or their messages, and blur names and personal details in screenshots.
Trust builds slowly, so repeat the habits that work: a review every week, a team face every fortnight and an honest answer whenever someone asks a hard question. Over a few months, those stories become the reason followers choose you over a business they know nothing about.
- 22. Screenshot a new review and say thank you.
- 23. Answer one customer question per day on camera.
- 24. Show a quality check most people never see.
- 25. Introduce a team member with a fun fact and their role.
- 26. Share a mistake and how you fixed it.
- 27. Repost a customer's tagged story, with a thank-you.
- 28. Show your local side: a nearby business you buy from, tagged with the Mention sticker.
Ideas for quiet days and special dates (29 to 35)
Our social media holidays calendar lists dates by month, so you can plan countdowns and themed stories in advance.
On quiet days, resist posting for the sake of it. One useful frame, such as a tip or a reminder of your hours, keeps you in followers' story tray without filling it with filler.
- 29. Throwback: your first day, first product or old shop sign.
- 30. This or that between two of your products.
- 31. A tip that takes ten seconds to show.
- 32. Weather check: how today's weather affects your work or opening hours.
- 33. Countdown to a holiday or awareness day that fits your business.
- 34. Ask people what they'd like to see more of.
- 35. Recap the week in five frames.
A sample week of stories, and what to measure
Here is a hypothetical week for a small yoga studio, mixing ideas from each group. It takes a few minutes a day, filmed on a phone between classes.
Notice the pattern: questions early in the week, answers mid-week, a selling story once the audience is warm and proof at the end. You can reuse that shape every week with different content.
Then check the results. Story insights show these metrics for each story, and you can still see them for up to two years after the story has expired.
- Viewers: unique accounts that saw your story at least once.
- Interactions: replies, shares, sticker taps and link taps.
- Profile activity: profile visits, follows and website clicks from your story.
- Compare the same day of the week across a month, not one story against another.
- Write down which sticker types and topics bring the most interactions and profile activity, and plan more of them next month.
| Day | Stories (hypothetical yoga studio) |
|---|---|
| Monday | Good morning from the studio, then a poll: morning or evening classes? |
| Tuesday | Questions sticker: ask us anything about starting yoga |
| Wednesday | Answers to two questions on camera, saved to a Beginners highlight |
| Thursday | Three spaces left in Saturday's workshop, with a Link sticker |
| Friday | A new review screenshot and a thank-you |
| Saturday | Workshop behind the scenes, with Add yours: share your mat |

Where Zolyp fits (disclosed: it's our product)
Stories work best when they're quick and real, which is why many owners film them themselves. Zolyp, which we make, can take the planned side off your hands: it plans your calendar, writes and designs feed posts, carousels and story graphics in your brand style, and schedules them. It publishes to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads, and nothing goes live until you approve it. Lite is $9 a month per brand if you only want to schedule posts you make yourself; the plans that create posts start at $29 a month, with a 3-day free trial.
Common questions
What should a business post on Instagram stories?
Timely, informal updates: what's happening today, polls and questions, low stock or remaining slots, reviews and answers to customer questions. Save the evergreen ones to highlights.
How long do Instagram stories last?
Stories expire after 24 hours. Add them to a highlight to keep them on your profile, and you can still see their insights for up to two years.
How many Instagram stories should a business post a day?
Instagram doesn't set a number. A few frames on most days is a sustainable habit; quality and replies matter more than count.
Which Instagram story stickers get the most replies?
It varies, but Poll, Quiz, Questions and the emoji slider ask for a quick tap, which is easier than writing a comment. Test them and compare interactions in story insights.
Can I add a link to an Instagram story?
Yes, with the Link sticker. Use it on stories about an offer, a booking or a new product.
What should I put in Instagram highlights?
The answers new visitors look for: prices, how to order or book, reviews, frequently asked questions and where to find you. Stories you add to a highlight stay on your profile until you remove them.
