How to use this list

Don't try to use all 40. Pick the group that matches what you need right now, choose three or four ideas that fit your business and turn them into repeating slots in your calendar. An idea that works once will usually work again with a new subject.

Each idea notes the format that tends to suit it. Reels are your main route to new people, carousels hold up to 20 photos and videos for teaching and comparisons, and stories disappear after 24 hours unless you save them to a highlight, so they suit everyday updates.

A simple way to choose: if you need new followers, start with the work and teaching ideas, which make good reels. If you have followers but few enquiries, use the trust and selling ideas. If your followers are quiet, use the conversation ideas in stories for a few weeks.

Avoid copying other accounts' posts. Instagram treats unoriginal content that's largely repurposed with only minor edits as ineligible for recommendations, so take the idea, not the post, and make it with your own footage and words.

Ideas that show your work (1 to 8)

People are curious about how things are made and done, and process footage is something only you can film. These ideas suit reels best, because watching something take shape keeps people to the end.

  • 1. Process reel: one thing made or done from start to finish, sped up. (Reel)
  • 2. Opening up: the first ten minutes of your day. (Stories)
  • 3. Tools of the trade: the three tools you couldn't work without, and why. (Carousel)
  • 4. Before and after: a job, room, haircut or garden, with one sentence on what changed. (Carousel or reel)
  • 5. The detail most people miss: a close-up of the part of your work that takes the most care. (Reel)
  • 6. Restock or delivery day: unboxing new stock or ingredients. (Stories or reel)
  • 7. A mistake you fixed: what went wrong and how you put it right. (Reel)
  • 8. Time-lapse of a busy day, ending with the finished result. (Reel)

Ideas that build trust (9 to 16)

Trust posts answer the silent question every new customer has: can I rely on these people? Faces, real customers and honest explanations do that better than claims. Always ask before featuring a customer, and never invent reviews or results.

  • 9. Meet the team: one person, one fact, one favourite job. (Post or reel)
  • 10. Customer story: a short case of a real customer's problem and result, with their permission. (Carousel)
  • 11. Review of the week: screenshot a review and say thanks. (Post or story)
  • 12. Why we started: the founder's reason, told in 30 seconds. (Reel)
  • 13. Our standards: what you always do that others skip, such as how you clean, source or check. (Carousel)
  • 14. Answering a myth about your trade. (Reel)
  • 15. Milestone: years open, jobs completed or a local award, framed as a thank-you. (Post)
  • 16. Behind the price: what goes into the cost of one product or service. (Carousel)

Ideas that teach (17 to 24)

Teaching posts earn saves and shares, and they position you as the expert before anyone has paid you. Carousels suit them well, because people can swipe at their own pace and come back later.

  • 17. Three quick tips your customers can use today. (Carousel)
  • 18. How to choose: a buyer's checklist for your type of product or service. (Carousel)
  • 19. Common mistakes customers make before they come to you. (Reel)
  • 20. Care guide: how to look after what they bought. (Carousel)
  • 21. Glossary post: explain three words from your trade in plain English. (Carousel)
  • 22. Do this, not that: one right and one wrong way. (Reel)
  • 23. Seasonal advice: what to do this month, such as garden prep or tax deadlines. (Post or carousel)
  • 24. FAQ answered on camera: one question, one clear answer. (Reel)

Ideas that sell (25 to 32)

Selling posts work best when the rest of your feed has already built interest. Show the product or service doing its job, give the price where you can and make the next step obvious.

  • 25. Product in use: show it being used, not just sitting on a shelf. (Reel)
  • 26. New in: the latest arrival, with price and how to get it. (Post or carousel)
  • 27. Three ways to use or style one product. (Carousel or reel)
  • 28. Limited slots or stock countdown, using the Countdown sticker. (Stories)
  • 29. Bundle or package explained, with what's included. (Carousel)
  • 30. Gift guide by budget or by person. (Carousel)
  • 31. How to order or book, step by step. (Carousel, then save to a highlight)
  • 32. Customer favourite: your best-seller and why people come back for it. (Reel)

Ideas that start conversations (33 to 40)

Instagram's sticker list includes Poll, Quiz, Questions, Add yours and Countdown, though not every sticker is available to everyone. Collab posts are shared to both accounts' followers, which makes idea 38 a growth tactic as well as a friendly one.

  • 33. This or that poll between two products, flavours or styles. (Stories)
  • 34. Quiz on a fun fact from your trade. (Stories)
  • 35. Ask me anything with the Questions sticker, answered the next day. (Stories)
  • 36. Add yours prompt: invite customers to share their photo with your product. (Stories)
  • 37. Help us name it: a new product, dish or pet in the shop. (Post)
  • 38. Local shout-out: a neighbouring business you love, tagged. (Post or collab)
  • 39. Unpopular opinion from your trade, said kindly. (Reel)
  • 40. Caption this: a funny photo from work. (Post)

Turn one idea into a week of posts

The easiest way to fill a calendar is to make one idea work several times in different formats. Here is a hypothetical example for a garden centre, starting from idea 23, seasonal advice.

  • Keep an ideas bank: a running list of ideas, with the pillar and format each suits.
  • Save your best story answers into a highlight called FAQs.
  • Reuse winners: a carousel that earned saves can become a reel next month.
  • Plan around your calendar: launches, seasons and local events make natural reasons to post.

Where Zolyp fits (disclosed: it's our product)

If the hard part is coming up with ideas every week, that's the part Zolyp, which we make, is built for. It plans a calendar around your content pillars, then writes and designs each post, carousel, reel or story from your Brand Brain, so the ideas fit your business rather than a generic list. It publishes to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads, and nothing goes live until you approve it. Lite is $9 a month per brand if you only want to schedule posts you make yourself; the plans that create posts start at $29 a month, with a 3-day free trial.

Common questions

What should a small business post on Instagram?

A mix of posts that show your work, build trust, teach something useful, sell and start conversations. Keep offers to a minority so people don't tune out.

How do I come up with Instagram content ideas?

Start with the questions customers ask you, the parts of your work people find interesting and the results you get. Keep a running list and turn each idea into a few formats.

What type of Instagram content gets the most engagement?

It varies by business, so test. Instagram's ranking explainer says it predicts actions like saves and shares in Explore and resharing for reels, so useful carousels and shareable reels are good places to start.

Can I reuse old Instagram content?

Yes, your own. Turn a carousel into a reel or update an old tip. Avoid reposting other people's content: Instagram treats unoriginal content with only minor edits as ineligible for recommendations.

How many content ideas do I need a month?

Fewer than you think. Four or five strong ideas, each used across a few formats, can fill a month.

Which Instagram format should I use for each idea?

Use reels for process, demos and anything you want new people to see; carousels for tips, checklists and comparisons people will save; and stories for timely updates, polls and questions. Save useful stories to highlights.
