How to mute accounts, words and conversations on X (Twitter)

Muting removes an account's posts from your timeline without unfollowing or blocking it. X says:

• Muted accounts don't know you've muted them, and you can unmute at any time
• They can still follow you and send you Direct Messages
• You stop getting push or SMS notifications from them
• If you follow them, their replies and mentions still show in your Notifications tab
• If you don't follow them, their replies and mentions don't appear in Notifications

To see everyone you've muted on x.com, go to More, Settings and privacy, Privacy and safety, Mute and block, then Muted accounts.

1. Select the More icon at the top of one of the account's posts, or on its profile.
2. Select Mute.
3. On the web, a banner confirms it. Select Undo if you muted the wrong account.

On x.com:

1. Select More in the side menu, then Settings and privacy.
2. Select Privacy and safety, then Mute and block.
3. Select Muted words, then the plus icon.
4. Enter one word, phrase, username, emoji or hashtag. Entries go in one at a time.
5. Choose Home timeline, Notifications or both.
6. Choose From anyone or From people you don't follow.
7. Under Mute timing, choose Forever, 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days, then select Save.

• In the apps, start from the Notifications tab, tap the gear icon, then Muted and Muted words
• Muting is case-insensitive, and muting a word also mutes its hashtag
• To mute posts that mention an account, include the @ sign. That mutes mentions, not the account itself
• Mutes last Forever unless you pick a shorter time

You stop getting new notifications about it, but you'll still see its posts in your timeline and when you open the original post. This is handy when a post of yours takes off and the notifications won't stop.

1. Open any post or reply in the conversation.
2. Select the More icon.
3. Select Mute this conversation and confirm.

• An account: go to its profile and select the More icon (on the web) or the unmute icon (in the app), or use your Muted accounts list
• A word: open Muted words, select the word, then delete it or change its timing and save

Our view for businesses: be careful muting words related to your product or brand. You might hide complaints you need to answer. Mute obvious spam terms instead, and check mentions by searching your business name.

• You're searching. Muted words only apply to your notifications and Home timeline, not search
• You turned on notifications for an account's posts. Muted words don't filter those alerts
• You added the word long ago. Older muted words were set to Notifications only; edit them to include your Home timeline
• You opened a conversation. Replies from muted accounts you follow are visible inside conversations
• You follow the muted account, so its replies and mentions still reach Notifications
