Hashtags on X (Twitter): how many to use and what X says

X recommends using no more than two hashtags per post, and its business guide says one or two. A hashtag is a # followed by a word or phrase with no spaces or punctuation; it makes your post easier to find in X search. X's rules forbid stuffing posts with unrelated hashtags or using trending hashtags to hijack a conversation.

How do hashtags work on X?

X says hashtags were created on X, and its help centre explains them in a few points:

  • A hashtag is the # symbol before a keyword or phrase, used to categorise posts so they show more easily in X search.
  • Clicking or tapping a hashtag shows other posts that use it.
  • Hashtags can go anywhere in a post.
  • Spaces or punctuation break a hashtag, so #SmallBusinessTips works and #small business tips doesn't.
  • On a public account, anyone who searches for the hashtag may find your post.
  • Hashtags that become very popular often turn into trending topics.

How many hashtags should you use on X?

X answers this directly. Its help centre recommends no more than two hashtags per post as best practice, while noting you may technically use as many as you like. X's business guide says the same thing in different words: if you use hashtags, limit them to one or two per post.

Zero is fine too. Many good posts on X have no hashtag at all, because the post reads more naturally without one.

What hashtag use breaks X's rules?

X's authenticity policy, which covers platform manipulation and spam, names several hashtag behaviours as not allowed:

  • Using trending or popular hashtags to subvert or manipulate a conversation, or to drive attention to accounts, websites, products or services.
  • Posting with excessive, unrelated hashtags in one post or across several.
  • Running multiple accounts to boost trending topics or hashtags.
  • Cross-posting similar or duplicate content from multiple accounts to the same trending topics or hashtags.

Do hashtags help the X algorithm?

X doesn't say they do. The README of X's published For you code lists the signals its ranking model predicts, such as likes, replies, reposts, dwell time and follows, and hashtags aren't among them. Hashtags help a different way: search and discovery by people who look for the tag. So use them where people genuinely search a tag, such as an event, a local area or an established community, not as a reach trick.

We've read X's help pages and the published README, not every line of the code, so treat "no hashtag boost" as what X documents rather than a proven fact.

How do you choose good hashtags for X?

The CamelCase tip is common accessibility practice rather than an X rule.

  1. Search the tag on X first and read the recent posts. If they're unrelated or spammy, skip it.
  2. Prefer specific tags people actually use: an event, a place, a product category or a community name.
  3. Use CamelCase for multi-word tags (#LondonCoffee) so they're easier to read, including for screen readers.
  4. Put a tag inside the sentence where it reads naturally, or at the end if it doesn't.
  5. Stop at two.
  6. Create your own tag for something you run, such as a campaign or event, and use it consistently.

How do you see whether a hashtag worked?

X's Post Activity Dashboard has a Hashtag clicks metric: clicks on the hashtags in a post. Compare posts with and without a hashtag over a month. If tagged posts don't get more impressions or hashtag clicks, you can drop the hashtags without losing anything. If one tag keeps bringing clicks, it's a sign people really browse it, so keep using it where it fits.

Do hashtags work in longer posts and polls?

Yes. X's Premium page says standard functionality, including posting media, creating polls and using hashtags, still applies to longer posts. A poll's question sits in the main compose box, so a hashtag can go there too, within the two-tag guidance.

Common questions

How many hashtags should I use on X?

No more than two. X's help centre recommends two at most as best practice, and its business guide says to limit hashtags to one or two per post.

Do hashtags still work on X?

Yes, for search and discovery. X says hashtags help posts show more easily in X search and that clicking one shows other posts using it. X doesn't document hashtags as a ranking boost in the For you timeline.

Can using too many hashtags get you in trouble on X?

It can. X's authenticity policy lists posting with excessive, unrelated hashtags, and using trending hashtags to manipulate a conversation or drive traffic, as not allowed.

Should I use trending hashtags on X?

Only when your post is genuinely about that topic. X's authenticity policy says using trending or popular hashtags to subvert a conversation, or to drive attention to accounts, websites, products or services, isn't allowed.

Where should hashtags go in an X post?

Anywhere. X says hashtags can be included anywhere in a post. Inside the sentence often reads best; at the end works when the tag doesn't fit naturally.
