What can you use collages for?

A collage combines cutouts from Pins and your own images into one interactive Pin. Pinterest suggests:

  • A mood board built from cutouts of your favourite Pins
  • Mixing products to show how they look together. Cutouts from product Pins can show price and availability, though shoppable collages have limited availability
  • Cutting out images from your camera roll and combining them with other cutouts

How do you make a collage on a computer?

On the Pinterest website:

  1. Log in and select the square-plus icon in the left-hand navigation, then Collage. On a business account, click the menu icon at the top left and select Create collage, or click Create on your profile and select Collage.
  2. Pick a Pin from the right, or click the sticker-image icon at the bottom to upload an image. Tabs above the Pins let you choose More ideas, Your boards, Brand kit, Image uploads or Drafts.
  3. Click the plus icon on a Pin to add all of it, or open the Pin, move the cropper over the part you want and click Add cutout.
  4. Each addition appears as a layer on the left. Select a layer to rearrange it, and use the collage tools to edit.
  5. Click Next, add the collage's details, then click Publish to post it as a Pin.

How do you make a collage in the app?

The steps are the same on Android and iPhone:

  2. Start a new collage or open a draft. Depending on your phone, you can also start from a template or remix an existing collage.

  4. Select a Pin, tap the part you want as a cutout, then tap Add, or Edit to adjust the selection. Use the image or camera icon to add your own photos.
  5. Tap Next at the top right to turn the collage into a Pin. You can also save it as a draft, download it or share it.

Which editing tools and brand kit options are there?

Pinterest notes that not every tool is available on every device yet.

  • Cutout tools: Select to detect objects automatically, Add and Erase for manual fixes, Shapes, duplicate, delete, and save a cutout as its own Pin
  • Cutout edits: motion filters, colour filters, borders, resizing, cropping and rotating
  • Collage tools: draw, add text, add photos or camera shots, reorder layers and choose a background colour
  • Brand kit, where available: up to 10 brand colours for backgrounds, text and drawings, up to two default fonts, and your logos and graphics

How do you control remixing, and what can go wrong?

If remixing is on, other people can use your collage and the elements in it in their own designs, and their published remix tags you. To change it on a computer, click the board icon on the left, open the Collages tab, open the collage, click the ellipsis icon, click Edit Pin and switch Enable remixing on or off. In the app, open the collage from your profile, tap the ellipsis icon, Edit Pin, and use the Enable remixing switch under Collage settings.

  • Can't change the design after publishing: once a collage is a Pin you can only edit minor details like the title and the remix setting. Make a new collage instead
  • No Remix option on someone's collage: the creator controls it, so pick another
  • Brand kit or a tool missing: Pinterest is still rolling these out across web, iPhone and Android
  • Collages are hard to find: they're on your profile, and on the web under the Collages tab
