How to label AI content on Instagram

Meta says there may be penalties if you don't label content as required. The rules for ads are different.

• Required: photorealistic video or realistic-sounding audio that was digitally generated or altered, including with AI
• Not required: images created or altered with AI, though Instagram may still label them if it detects AI
• Needs a label: a realistic video of people walking round a market, a song with AI vocals, a reel with a realistic AI voiceover
• Doesn't need one: a cartoon-style landscape video

1. Create a post or a reel as usual.
2. Before sharing, tap the toggle next to Add AI label.
3. Share it. People will see an AI content label on it.

Instagram also adds a Captured with a camera label when secure metadata confirms a camera took the photo or video. It says that label is neutral and doesn't affect reach, and a missing label doesn't mean AI was used.

• Content made or changed with Meta AI tools may be labelled automatically, even if you download it and upload it again
• Content with industry-standard signals showing it was created with AI, including from other companies' tools, gets an AI content label
• Content with signals showing it was only modified with AI doesn't get a label on the post itself; the details are in the Options menu
• Not all AI content carries the information needed to identify it

This label is for accounts that regularly post content featuring an AI-generated person instead of a real one. It shows on the profile, in search and next to the account's posts, comments and messages. Instagram says it neither helps nor hurts reach, but unlabelled accounts it believes are AI-generated profiles may lose eligibility for recommendations until they add it.

1. Go to your profile.
2. Tap Edit profile.
3. Turn on the toggle next to AI-generated profile.

Instagram's help page doesn't describe a way to remove a label it applied automatically.

• Your editing app added an AI signal. Instagram says tools that use AI to change an image's size or colour may do this
• You used a Meta AI tool. That content may be labelled automatically
• You chose not to label it. Instagram may apply a label anyway if it detects AI generation or editing
• You can't see why. Tap the Options menu on the post to see the AI information Instagram received
