How do you stream with Live Studio?

Live Studio is X's professional livestreaming tool and replaces Media Studio Producer. Creating a livestream there doesn't post it on X: open the livestream's details page and click Post livestream on X, ideally before and during the stream. A Private stream stays inside Live Studio, which is useful for a test run.

  1. Open Creator Studio and select Live Studio under Tools.
  2. Click New Livestream and enter a title. If the stream is public, the title appears on X.
  3. Choose a Source, or create one in the region closest to your encoder.
  4. Copy the RTMP URL (or the RTMPS URL) and Stream Key into your encoder.
  5. Upload a thumbnail. X recommends 16:9 at 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080.
  6. Set visibility (Public or Private), chat controls and any country restrictions.
  7. Choose Go Live to start now, or Later to schedule it.

  • You can schedule up to one year ahead
  • Visibility and country restrictions can only be changed before the stream starts; chat controls can change during it
  • Chat can be open to Everyone, Verified Accounts, Accounts You Follow, Subscribers, or turned off
  • Followers with live video notifications on are alerted when the stream starts, not when it's first posted

How do you manage viewers and comments?

  • Viewers can comment and send hearts on iOS, Android and the web
  • To stop someone commenting, tap their comment, open their profile, tap the gear icon and choose Block User. They can no longer watch or join your live videos, and they're blocked on X
  • Viewers can report a comment with Report Comment, which hides that commenter for them for the rest of the video

What happens to your live video afterwards?

  • It stays as a post, so it can be searched and embedded like any other post
  • At the end, tap Save to camera roll to keep a copy on your phone
  • In the app, edit the title, thumbnail and starting point from the overflow menu with Edit Broadcast. Titles can be edited three times, and edits take up to 15 minutes to show
  • Share it with Share Live, Share From Beginning, or from a point you choose
  • Delete it by deleting the post
  • From Live Studio, you can download a finished livestream

Why won't your X live stream work?

  • You can't see the Live option: your posts may be protected
  • Waiting for stream: Live Studio can't detect your encoder. Start it and send video to the source
  • The media could not be played: check the RTMP URL and Stream Key in your encoder
  • Livestream already running: end the stream already using that source first
  • Timed out: the encoder wasn't sending at the scheduled start. Timed-out streams can't restart; create a new one
  • Create Source does nothing: you may have hit the limit of 100 sources
