How to write a thread on X (Twitter)

A thread on X is a series of connected posts from one account. To make one, start a new post, then select the plus icon to add the next post below it; repeat for each part and select Post all. Each post in the thread has its own 280-character limit. You can add more posts later from the thread's detail page.

What is a thread on X?

X describes a thread as a series of connected posts from one person, used to add context, give an update or make a longer point. It's still the main way to say more than one post allows if you don't pay for longer posts, and it has an advantage even if you do: each post can be liked, reposted and replied to on its own.

How do you create a thread in the X app?

The steps from X's help centre for iPhone and Android:

  1. Tap the compose icon to start a new post and write the first part.
  2. Tap the plus icon to add the next post. It lights up once you've typed something.
  3. Keep adding posts the same way. Any text over the character limit is highlighted so you can trim it before posting.
  4. To remove one post, tap its grey delete icon. To delete the whole thread, tap the blue delete icon.
  5. When every part is ready, tap Post all.
  • Not ready to post? The app can save a thread as a draft. Thread drafts show how many posts they contain, and you can tap to review and edit them before posting.

How do you add to a thread after posting it?

Open the thread's detail page and select Add another post; only you, as the author, see that prompt. In the app you can also open the composer, pull down and tap Continue Thread to add to your last post, or choose Select another post to attach the new post to an earlier one.

When you post a photo or video straight from the app's camera, X also offers Add to thread, which connects it to your last post.

How do threads look to your followers?

  • A thread of two or three posts from someone you follow usually appears in the timeline joined by a line.
  • With four or more posts, the timeline cuts it short and shows a Show this thread link.
  • On your profile, each post in the thread appears separately, newest first, each with its own Show this thread option.
  • If someone reposts, quotes or shares one post from your thread by Direct Message, the reader still gets Show this thread for the full context.
  • Anyone mentioned in a thread is notified each time they're mentioned.

How do you write a thread people finish?

X doesn't publish a formula, so treat this as editorial advice rather than platform rules. The first post does most of the work, because it's often the only one people see before deciding to open the rest.

  • Make the first post stand on its own: say what the thread is about and why it's worth the reader's time.
  • Give each post one idea. If a post needs two, split it.
  • Lead each post with its point, so a reader skimming the thread still gets it.
  • Keep it as short as the idea allows. Three tight posts beat ten padded ones.
  • Put photos or a short video where they explain something, not as decoration.
  • End with what you want people to do next: reply with a question, visit a page, or follow for the next one.
  • Put any @mentions where they matter. In a longer post only the first 280 characters notify; in a thread each post does.

Where does Zolyp fit? (Disclosure: Zolyp is our product)

Zolyp writes short, hook-first posts for X and, when there's more to say, a thread: text longer than 280 characters goes out as a thread, split at paragraphs. Each post is written from your Brand Brain, so it sounds like you, and you approve the week before anything is published.

Common questions

How many posts can a thread on X have?

X's help centre doesn't state a maximum number of posts in a thread. Each post has its own 280-character limit, and threads of four or more posts are shortened in the timeline with a Show this thread link.

Can you save a thread as a draft on X?

Yes, in the app. X's help centre says a thread can be saved as a draft, and thread drafts show how many posts they contain so you can tell them apart from single-post drafts.

How do I add a post to an old thread?

Open the thread's detail page and select Add another post. Only the thread's author sees that option. In the app, you can also use Continue Thread from the composer.

Is a thread better than a long post on X?

It depends on the goal. A thread lets each point be liked and reposted on its own and works without a subscription. A longer post keeps everything in one place but needs X Premium, can't currently be scheduled or drafted on the web, and only notifies mentions in the first 280 characters.
