What are free local listings?

A Merchant Center add-on that lets the products in your physical shop appear at no cost across Google to nearby shoppers. Its paid counterpart is local inventory ads, which needs a Google Ads account.

  • Countries include Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK and the US, among others; Google's overview lists them all.
  • If your website doesn't show stock for your shop, Google can host a page showing your in-store products.

Is there a simpler route for a small shop?

Yes. Shops with a wired barcode scanner or compatible point of sale system, manufacturer (UPC/EAN) barcodes and a verified profile can use the Local Inventory app to add in-store products automatically at no charge. Google's pages differ on where: the Business Profile page lists the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland and Australia; the Merchant Center overview lists the UK, Ireland, the US and Canada.

How do you link your Business Profile to Merchant Center?

  2. Select Apps and services, then Add service.
  3. Select Google Business Profile, then Next.
  4. Choose the profile or stores to link, then Next.
  5. Confirm, then select Link.
  • For a profile you don't manage, select Profile you don't manage, enter the owner's or manager's email and send a request; they accept it in Business Profile.

What does the guided setup ask?

Google's implementation guide has 10 steps. For a single shop, the main decisions are:

  • Stores: confirm your linked stores. You can add a logo and colours for free local listings.
  • Availability: choose whether you know stock by store, or can ship products to the shop for pickup.
  • Product pages: say whether your website shows in-store availability. If not, Google generates a page with your product and store information.
  • Pickup and on display in store: optional labels if customers can collect or see items in store.
  • Inventory: Google may add in-store stock it finds on your website, and you can add your own local inventory data.
  • Germany, Austria and Switzerland: you must provide an Impressum page.
  • Verification: if your product pages don't show stock, name an inventory verification contact, verify their email and request inventory verification.

Why can't you finish setting it up?

Check these:

  • You can't add a store. Only a super admin can; find who that is under People and access in Business Manager.
  • Request inventory verification is greyed out. Google says it becomes available within 48 hours once the contact's details are verified and your stores, product data and inventory data are added.
  • You can't edit store details from Merchant Center. You need to be an owner or manager on that store's Business Profile.
  • Products are disapproved. Google disapproves products and accounts that break its local inventory ads and free local listings policies.

How many Business Profiles can I link to Merchant Center?

Up to 200, according to Google's Merchant Center help.

Can I add the same shop to more than one Merchant Center account?
