Why is my YouTube upload so slow?

YouTube Help names four causes:

  • File type and size: the format changes how big the file is, and a recommended format uploads faster.
  • A slow or unstable internet connection, one of the main causes.
  • Heavy upload traffic: uploading at peak hours can be slower because your internet provider sees spikes in upload traffic.
  • Quality: a 4K video takes longer than a 1080p one.

How do you fix a stuck YouTube upload?

Work through these in order:

  1. Run an internet speed test (search Internet speed test on Google) to check your connection.
  2. If the upload is still moving, let it finish rather than starting again.
  3. If you had to stop, go to youtube.com/upload within 24 hours and select the same file from your computer to carry on where you left off.
  4. If it keeps failing, export the video again in a recommended format and upload that file.
  5. If you see a security error, turn off your firewall or antivirus software temporarily and try again.

Why is my YouTube video not in HD yet?

YouTube first processes a new upload in low quality so you can finish the upload faster. Higher qualities such as 1080p and 4K take longer, and may be missing for several hours. YouTube's suggested way around it:

  1. Upload the video as Unlisted.
  2. Wait until all qualities are available.
  3. Change the visibility to Public.
  • Some devices or browsers can't play 4K, so a missing 4K option isn't always a processing problem.
  • Colours looking wrong usually means the colour metadata doesn't match how the video was mastered. Use BT.709 for non-HDR video.

What export settings avoid upload problems?

If audio or video looks wrong after upload, YouTube suggests re-exporting with these settings and uploading again:

  1. Set video compression to H.264.
  2. Keep the frame rate between 24 and 60 fps (23.98, 29.97 and 59.94 also work).
  3. Set data rate and key frames to automatic, and turn frame reordering off.
  4. Set audio to AAC-LC at 128 to 256 kbps, with a 44.1 or 48 kHz sample rate.
  5. Keep the original resolution and export.
  • Audio out of sync usually means the audio and video tracks are different lengths. Match them in your editor before exporting.
  • Audio that plays on a computer but not a phone is often a mono compatibility problem; make sure the audio is in phase.
