What is a Community Guidelines strike?

It's YouTube's penalty for content that breaks its Community Guidelines. The guidelines cover every kind of content: videos, including unlisted and private ones, plus comments, links, posts and thumbnails. You're told by email, and the notice says what was removed, which policy it broke and what you can do next.

It's separate from a copyright strike, which has its own rules. Removals for other reasons, such as a privacy complaint or a court order, don't bring a strike.

What happens at each stage?

Penalties build up within a rolling 90-day window:

  • Breaking the same policy again within 90 days of a warning may mean the warning doesn't expire and you get a strike.
  • Severe abuse can end a channel without any warning.

What can't you do during a first strike?

For one week from the day you acknowledge the strike, you can't:

  • Upload videos or live stream, or start a scheduled live stream.
  • Schedule a video to go public. Already scheduled public videos are set to private and need rescheduling after the week.
  • Create a Premiere or add a trailer to an upcoming Premiere or live stream.
  • Create custom thumbnails or posts.
  • Create or edit playlists, add collaborators to them, or save playlists from the watch page.

How do you appeal a Community Guidelines strike?

Read the policy named in the notice first. Then, on a computer:

  1. Go to your Dashboard in YouTube Studio.
  2. Select the Channel violations card.
  3. Select Appeal, explain why and submit.
  • To appeal a single video removal instead: in YouTube Studio, select Content, find the video, hover over the Notice, click the link, enter your reason and click Submit.
  • Appeal warnings and strikes within 6 months, and removed content within 1 year.
  • Each strike can be appealed only once, and a rejected appeal brings no extra penalty.
  • Removed playlists and thumbnails are appealed through the form in YouTube's email.

What can happen after an appeal?

You get the result by email. There are three outcomes:

  • The content followed the guidelines: it's reinstated and the strike removed. If it was a warning, your next offence is a warning again.
  • It followed the guidelines but isn't suitable for everyone: YouTube age-restricts it, hiding it from signed-out viewers, under-18s and people using Restricted Mode.
  • It broke the guidelines: the strike stays and the video stays down.

What makes a strike worse?

Two common reactions backfire:

  • Deleting the video. It doesn't remove the strike, you can't appeal it afterwards, and strikes can still be issued for deleted content.
  • Using another channel. While a restriction is active, using, creating or acquiring another channel to get around it counts as circumvention and may get all your channels terminated.

Where Zolyp fits

A strike also blocks scheduling, so a planned week of YouTube videos may need moving. Zolyp, which publishes this guide, publishes to YouTube as one of 9 platforms (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads). It creates video uploads and Shorts with titles and descriptions written for search, can set a custom thumbnail on a standard video, and schedules them with the posts on your other networks. You approve the week before anything goes live.

Common questions

How long does a YouTube Community Guidelines strike last?

Each strike expires 90 days after it was issued. The penalty itself lasts 1 week for a first strike and 2 weeks for a second.

Do you get a warning before a strike on YouTube?

Usually. The first violation is typically a warning, but severe abuse can lead to termination without one.

How many strikes before a YouTube channel is deleted?

Three strikes within the same 90-day period may lead to the channel being permanently removed.

Does deleting the video remove the strike?

No. The strike stays on your channel and you can no longer appeal it.

How long do I have to appeal a strike?

6 months from when the warning or strike was issued. Each strike can be appealed once.

Is a Community Guidelines strike the same as a copyright strike?

No. They're separate systems with their own rules and appeals.
