What is the difference between public, unlisted and private?

Every video and Short has one of three visibility settings. This is how YouTube compares them:

  • Unlisted viewers don't need a Google Account, and anyone with the link can pass it on.
  • An unlisted video can show on your channel if someone adds it to a public playlist.
  • YouTube reviews all three for ad suitability, copyright and abuse prevention, so private isn't a way around the rules.

How do you change a video's visibility on a computer?

Creators aged 18 and over upload as public by default; creators aged 13 to 17 upload as private. Anyone can change it afterwards:

  2. In the left menu, select Content. For live uploads, open the Live tab.
  3. Point to the video.
  4. Click the arrow under Visibility and choose Public, Private or Unlisted.
  5. Click Save.

How do you share a private video?

Private sharing works by email address, so it suits a draft you want a colleague or client to check before it goes live:

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. In the left menu, select Content.
  3. Click the video you want to share.
  4. Click the Visibility box and select Share privately.
  5. Enter the email addresses to share with, then click Save.
  • Public: everyday uploads you want found in search and recommendations.
  • Unlisted: a video for customers only, such as setup help you link from an email, or one you want people to comment on without it showing on your channel.
  • Private: drafts and internal review.
  • Scheduled: in the Visibility step of an upload, choose Schedule and pick a date. The video stays private until then.

Why can't people see or comment on my video?

Most visibility surprises come from one of these:

  • It's private: private videos take no comments, and you can't change comment settings on them. YouTube suggests unlisted if you want comments on a video that isn't public.
  • It's unlisted: it won't show in search, on your channel or in subscribers' feeds, which is how unlisted is meant to work.
  • The upload window was closed early: if you close it before choosing visibility, the video is saved as private.
  • A scheduled video didn't go live: if the channel has a Community Guidelines strike, scheduled videos stay private during the penalty period and must be rescheduled afterwards.
  • Comments are off on a public video: videos set as made for kids have comments turned off.

Where Zolyp fits

Unlisted and private have their uses, but public videos are the ones that build a channel. Zolyp, which publishes this guide, publishes to YouTube as one of 9 platforms (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads). It creates video uploads and Shorts with titles and descriptions written for search, can set a custom thumbnail on a standard video, and schedules them with the posts on your other networks. You approve the week before anything goes live.

Common questions

Can people find an unlisted YouTube video?

Not through search, related videos, recommendations or your channel page. Anyone with the link can watch and share it, and it can show on your channel if someone adds it to a public playlist.

Can you comment on a private YouTube video?

No. Comments aren't available on private videos. Use unlisted if you want comments on a video that isn't public.

Who can see a private YouTube video?

Only you and the people you share it with by email through Share privately in YouTube Studio.

Does YouTube check private and unlisted videos?

Yes. YouTube's systems and reviewers can check private, unlisted and public videos for ad suitability, copyright and abuse prevention.

How do I make a private video public later?

In YouTube Studio, select Content, point to the video, choose Public under Visibility and click Save. Or schedule it during upload so it goes public on a set date.
