Is 1280 x 720 still a good thumbnail size?
Many older guides quote 1280 x 720. It is still 16:9 and above the 640-pixel minimum, so YouTube accepts it. YouTube's current advice, though, is to make the image as large as possible, because the thumbnail is also the preview image in the embedded player and shows at many sizes. If you design at 3840 x 2160, you can export a smaller copy for the phone upload limit.
Podcast playlists are the exception: they use a square 1:1 image instead of 16:9.

How do you unlock custom thumbnails?
Until a channel is verified, YouTube only offers automatically generated suggestions. Custom thumbnails are an intermediate feature, which you unlock by verifying a phone number:
- Go to youtube.com/verify while signed in to the channel.
- Enter a phone number and follow the steps to confirm it.
- Return to YouTube Studio. The Upload file option appears under Thumbnail. If it doesn't, check you verified while signed in to the right channel.

How do you add a custom thumbnail to a video?
You can replace a thumbnail at any time, before or after the video is public.
In YouTube Studio you can also use Ask Studio: open it while publishing, ask it to create a thumbnail, and refine the suggestions with follow-up prompts, such as asking for larger text.
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Content in the left menu.
- Open the video you want to edit.
- Under Thumbnail, click Upload file and choose your image, or select Get suggestions to generate one.
- Click Save. It can take a while for the new thumbnail to appear on YouTube.

How do you add a custom thumbnail to a Short?
Custom Shorts thumbnails can only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer, and the account must be verified.
- Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer.
- Select Content, then Shorts at the top.
- Open the Short you want to edit.
- Under Thumbnail, click Upload file and choose a 9:16 image.
- Click Save.
- If a vertical video has a 16:9 custom thumbnail, YouTube replaces it with an automatic 4:5 one on the home, explore and subscription pages. It still shows in the watch feed, watch history and on non-mobile platforms.

What makes a thumbnail work?
YouTube's own thumbnail tips are short: don't make the design too complex, and use the largest image you can because thumbnails display differently across devices. To see whether a thumbnail works, watch impressions click-through rate on the video's Reach tab in YouTube Analytics. Channels with advanced features can also run A/B tests. In practice for a business:
- One clear subject, such as a face, the product or the finished result.
- A few words at most, large enough to read on a phone.
- Match the title's promise; a misleading thumbnail makes viewers leave.
- Keep a consistent colour or layout so your videos are recognisable in a feed.
- Check it at phone size before you upload; on a phone screen it will be small, so anything fiddly disappears.

What are the rules and limits on thumbnails?
Thumbnails must follow YouTube's Community Guidelines. One that contains nudity, hate speech, violence or harmful content can be rejected and earn a strike, and repeat offences can remove custom thumbnail access for 30 days.
There's also a daily limit on how many custom thumbnails a channel can upload. If you see Daily custom thumbnail limit reached, try again in 24 hours. The limit varies by country or region and channel history, and Community Guidelines strikes reduce it.
If you think a thumbnail was wrongly struck, you can appeal. YouTube may also turn off custom thumbnails in certain search results when it considers them inappropriate for viewers.

It creates video uploads and Shorts with titles and descriptions written for search, can set a custom thumbnail on a standard video, and schedules them with the posts on your other networks. You approve the week before anything goes live.

YouTube recommends 3840 x 2160 pixels at 16:9 for videos and 2160 x 3840 at 9:16 for Shorts, in JPG or PNG.
What is the maximum thumbnail file size on YouTube?
50 MB when uploading from a computer, and 2 MB for video thumbnails uploaded from a phone.

Can I change a YouTube thumbnail after publishing?
Yes. In YouTube Studio, open the video from Content, click Upload file under Thumbnail, choose the new image and click Save. It can take a while to update on YouTube.
