When do you have to disclose AI content on YouTube?

The rule covers content that is realistic and was fully or partly made or altered with generative AI, where it:

  • Makes a real person appear to say or do something they didn't.
  • Alters footage of a real event or place.
  • Generates a realistic scene that didn't happen.
  • Creates music that is the main focus of the video.

What doesn't need an AI label?

Most everyday business uses of AI fall outside the rule:

  • Unrealistic content, such as a fantasy world or an animated video.
  • Minor edits: beauty filters, colour and lighting changes, effects such as background blur or a vintage look, and creating captions.
  • Production help: using AI for an outline, script, thumbnail, title, infographic or ideas.
  • Technical fixes: sharpening, upscaling, repair, and voice or audio repair.
  • Cloning your own voice for voiceovers or dubs.

How do you disclose AI content in YouTube Studio?

Disclosure happens during upload. YouTube's upload guide also lists the altered or synthetic content disclosure among the advanced settings under Show more on the Details page.

  1. Go to YouTube Studio.
  2. Start uploading your video as usual.
  3. In the Attributes section, find AI use.
  4. Choose Yes if the content meets the disclosure rules, or No if it doesn't.
  5. Finish the rest of the video details and publish.

Where does the AI label appear?

When you choose Yes, YouTube adds a label. Where it shows depends on the content:

  • On the video player: may appear for AI-generated music or photorealistic AI content.
  • In the expanded description: for AI audio that isn't music, or AI content that isn't photorealistic or is animated.
  • YouTube may also add a label itself for content made with its own AI tools, content with C2PA metadata, or content its systems detect as AI-made or altered. You get a notification in YouTube Studio when this happens.

What happens if you don't disclose, or get a label by mistake?

Disclosing doesn't limit a video's audience or affect whether it can earn money. Not disclosing is where the risk sits:

  • Creators who consistently don't disclose may face manual labels or penalties, including content removal or suspension from the YouTube Partner Program.
  • Community Guidelines apply to AI-made content like any other.
  • If YouTube labels a video by mistake, you can usually change the disclosure to No under Attributes.
  • You can't change labels on content made with YouTube's own AI tools, content with C2PA metadata, or labels added after manual review.

Common questions

Do I need to label videos with AI-written scripts on YouTube?

No. Using AI for an outline, script, title, thumbnail or ideas counts as production help and doesn't need disclosure.

Does an AI label reduce views on YouTube?

YouTube says disclosing alone won't limit a video's audience or affect its eligibility to earn money.

Can YouTube add an AI label without me?

Yes. It may label content made with its own AI tools, content with C2PA metadata, or content its systems detect as AI-made or altered.

Can I remove an AI label YouTube added?

Usually, by changing the disclosure to No under Attributes. Labels on content made with YouTube's AI tools, content with C2PA metadata or labels added after manual review can't be changed.

Do I need to disclose an AI voice clone of myself?

No. YouTube lists cloning your own voice for voiceovers or dubs as not needing disclosure.
