How does YouTube decide what counts as a Short?
Shape and length. Since 15 October 2024, any video uploaded with a square or vertical aspect ratio and a length of up to 3 minutes is treated as a Short. Videos uploaded before that date keep their original category, so an older 2-minute vertical video stays long-form.
You can record Shorts with the Shorts camera in the YouTube app, or upload vertical videos from a phone or computer. A horizontal video, or anything over 3 minutes, is a regular video.
One rule matters for businesses using music: a Short longer than one minute with an active copyright claim of any kind is blocked worldwide until the claim is resolved. Shorts under a minute keep the old rules.

What are Shorts good for?
Reach. YouTube describes Shorts as a way for anyone to connect with a new audience using just a smartphone, and its CEO said in January 2026 that Shorts average 200 billion daily views.
Good Shorts for a business are quick and specific: one tip, one before-and-after, one product in use, one question answered. They're also the easiest way to reuse clips you already film for Instagram or TikTok.
Read Shorts numbers carefully. Since 31 March 2025 a Short's views count every start or replay with no minimum watch time; YouTube kept the old measure as Engaged views, and that's the one to compare Shorts by.

What are long-form videos good for?
Depth and intent. Long-form is where you answer the questions people search for: how to choose, how to fix, how much it costs, what to expect. Viewers who watch ten minutes of you explaining your trade arrive at your door already trusting you.
YouTube is also big on the living-room screen: Nielsen measured it at a record 14.2% of all TV viewing in the US in July 2026.
Every account can upload videos up to 15 minutes. To go longer, verify your account with a phone number; verified accounts can upload files up to 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less.

Shorts vs long-form for monetisation
Most small businesses use YouTube for customers, not ad revenue, but the rules show how YouTube values each format. You can join the YouTube Partner Program with either 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified public watch hours on long-form videos in the last 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days.
The two don't mix: watch hours from Shorts views in the Shorts feed don't count towards the 4,000-hour threshold. Shorts earn through Shorts revenue sharing from the Shorts feed; long-form videos earn on the watch page.

How do you use Shorts and long-form together?
The common pattern is to make one longer video, then cut Shorts from it that point back to it:
- Film the long-form video first, answering one question your customers ask.
- Cut two or three moments from it that stand alone, each under a minute if they use licensed music.
- Reframe them as vertical clips and upload them as Shorts.
- In YouTube Studio, open Content, click each Short and choose a Related video from your channel: the full video. Viewers see a clickable link below your channel handle.
- Check which Shorts send the most viewers on, and cut more like them.
- Adding a related video needs advanced feature access, and the linked video must be public or unlisted.

Which should a small business start with?
Start with what you can keep up. A channel that posts one useful Short a week for a year usually does more for a business than three ambitious long videos and then silence.
- Start with Shorts if you already film quick clips for Instagram or TikTok, you're new to YouTube, or your work is visual and quick to show.
- Start with long-form if customers research before they buy (services, trades, clinics, education), or you're happy talking to camera for ten minutes.
- Add the other once the first is a habit. Long-form gives Shorts something to point to; Shorts give long-form a way to be found.
- Judge Shorts by engaged views, subscribers gained and clicks to related videos, and long-form by watch time and enquiries.

Common questions
How long can a YouTube Short be?
Up to 3 minutes, in a square or vertical format. Anything longer, or horizontal, is uploaded as a regular video.
Are Shorts or long videos better for a business channel?
Both do different jobs. Shorts help new people find you; long-form videos answer searched-for questions and build trust. Linking Shorts to a related long video connects the two.
Do Shorts views count towards the Partner Program?
They count towards the Shorts route (10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, plus 1,000 subscribers), but watch hours from the Shorts feed don't count towards the 4,000-hour long-form threshold.
Why can't I upload a video longer than 15 minutes?
Your account needs to be verified. Verify it at youtube.com/verify with a text or voice call code; then you can upload up to 12 hours or 256 GB, whichever is less.
Can I link a Short to one of my longer videos?
Yes. In YouTube Studio, open Content, click the Short and choose a Related video from your channel. It needs advanced feature access, and viewers see a clickable link below your channel handle.
Can I use music in a YouTube Short?
Yes, but a Short over one minute with an active copyright claim is blocked worldwide until the claim is resolved. Keep Shorts with claimed music under a minute.
